Hi all,

I have done a tune up on my Craftsman tractor with it's Briggs and Stratton 16.5 HP engine, and I changed out the spark plug with a Champion RC12YC. I really don't like Champion plugs, but Champion is the OE plug for Briggs, so I found a US made Champion (boxed ones from the auto parts store are US made, carded ones sold at Home Depot/Lowe's/Walmart were all Hecho en Mexico), gapped it to .030" and installed it. I tried to cross reference it to an NGK which is my preferred brand, but about 20 different part numbers came up. Which is the correct one, or which is the one most people are using?

And yes, I'm sure the Champion plug is probably fine, but it's just personal preference that I'd like to swap it for an NGK. Thanks!

The NGK I stock as an equivalent to the RC12YC is the BCP(R)5ES (6130).

Generally I also prefer NGKs but I have good luck with the Champions in my B&S stuff... I usually find gapping them properly more of a chore though due to oft misaligned electrodes.

Thanks! I had the exact same problem with the misaligned electrode tip on the Champion too. In general I've just not done well with champion. I have had done just fine with NGK, ACDelco, Autolite and Denso. What is the difference between the NGK 6130 and the 2460?

Most plugs are not aligned out of the box.
Champion recently changed their box from red, white and black to gold and black with maybe some red writing. This is probably why you see place of manufacturer changing.
NGKs used to be made in Japan. Not anymore. The ones I pull out all say Made in Japan. Not the new ones. Made in India I think..can't remember.

I hate Champion plugs in everything BUT a mower or small engine.
They outlast NGK all the time.
An NGK can be fine one day and one second then just stop working or the engine will pop and die every so many seconds. Champions RARELY do this. I've never seen it, but had hondas with NGKs pop and blow the air filter cover off.

Drive size to install. 6130 is 16mm, 2460 is 5/8"... very close but that's how they slice it.

Actually the Champion I just bought was in one of those gold and black boxes and it was a US made plug. I think I still have the little box on the workbench. Seems odd to have so many issues with the NGKs, since they are an OEM for so many manufacturers.

Ahhh, I see. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Sure thing. :trink39:

Toby, all of the NGKs I get here (in Japan of course) are still made in Japan.

If they were slicing a nickel for the export market I guess I wouldn't be surprised... seems to be how things are going all over.

One thing about the Champions that *may* contribute to the crooked electrodes... at least the ones I get have no 'electrode protector sleeve' in the box, they're just tossed in there and left to rattle around. Easy to see how that could cause problems if rough handling along the way.

I've had Champion knock-offs from a major aftermarket supplier arrive unboxed, just bagged and thrown across the ocean. Not to be trusted, they went straight into the bin.

It's all fun and games until that electrode gets hung up in a valve...
