What is inline with the starting circuit?

LT155 here. I get into a situation where sometimes it will not turn. I usually get out the air compressor and blow the seat safety switch, pto switch and key switch. I'm not sure what pieces are part of the starting circuit: seat switch, brake switch, pto switch. I know you can get off the tractor (seat switch) so long as the brake is activated but I don't know if you have to actually be sitting on the tractor.

I'm tempted to just buy all new parts: key switch, pto switch, brake switch (not sure where that is) and a solenoid - in case it's just an intermittent unit. I tried putting a jumper on the seat switch and that didn't help so I'm down to these things. It's not a battery or ground issue, the battery is fully charged and the ground connections are good. I was trying to start it yesterday and I moved the throttle from full choke to full speed and also moved forward on the seat and it went dead. As usual got out the air compressor etc and eventually got things to turn over again. The tractor runs fine once it's started.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure if it's the same on the LT155... the newer ones require a butt in the seat, brake pedal depressed, and PTO off in order to start.

That's the way mine is too. Not sure how the brake on deactivates the seat switch. All the safety switches are inline, so if any one is not making contact, it won't start. Another possibility is that there is a loose connection in the wiring somewhere. Is there a solenoid switch for the starter?...That might be sticking.

Hi, Yeah, the solenoid is on my list of things as well. The only other items are the relays under the key switch, not sure what those are for but I believe they are for the starter as well. I don't have an RIO switch and relay - so that's one less thing to test/replace.

I'm wondering if the seat switch is normally open or closed when there is a butt in the seat. I replaced that years ago. I tried to remove it but in my haste I wasn't able to. I know a lot of people like to test each unit to diagnose it but my feeling is that if I remove a 21 year old brake switch (or whatever) I'd rather just put a new one in rather than the old grassy, dusty one. (Most of these parts are fairly cheap enough to do take this approach anyway, I feel like it's a small revamp of the tractor, although I feel like I've been revamping for the past few years.)

When it will not start, when turning the key does it "click"? Or just totally dead?
I'm not sure with the 100 series, but my X500 needs only the brake pedal down and weight in the seat. It will start with the PTO handle in the engaged or disengaged position. I think it's because the brake switch shuts off the PTO anyway, and starting it with the PTO handle in the engaged position starts it with the PTO off, so you need to move the handle to the disengaged position and then back to the engaged position after it's started in order to turn the PTO on anyway.

On both my LA140 and X394, the seat switch is normally closed with no pressure on it and then opens with someone in the seat.
Electrical diagnosis is always fun, but it helps to have a roadmap. This may or may not be your specific model, but it shows that the switches are double pole.

Totally dead.
