My sister in law has a john deere 400 and the front crank seal is leaking. What I am wondering is what engine does the 400 come with so I can order a seal.

Also the muffler that is on the tractor exits through the grill so exhaust is blowing right on the snowblower. I checked out a couple pics on google and it looks like it should exit out the left side. Which is right?

Kohler KQ532. 19.9 hp.

I was under the impression that the early years had a front exit exhaust, where later year models went to the left side panel exit.

Yes the exhaust either went out the front or on the side. I believe it was the earlier models that exited through the front. Mine is a 1982 model and it routes the exhaust to the side. It is a kohler engine too.
