What do YOU buy before a snow storm?

I was on another thread and it got me thinking.

I am in Maryland. When there is a threat of snow everyone makes a beeline to the grocery stores. That in itself is understandable, but we buy things that to me are STUPID and not really appropriate in the quanity.

Everyone clears the shelves of milk, bread, eggs and toilet paper instead of stocking up on canned goods, candles, matches, batteries and such. Why milk, bread, eggs and toilet paper? Is it a Maryland tradition I was left out of that during a snowstorm your supposed to make eggs and toast, drink milk and then battle each other for the bathroom as a sporting event????

What do YOU buy when the threat of snow is in the forecast? And why?

Besides fuel for your tractor!:thThumbsU

Sounds like Florida before a hurricane. What are ya gonna do with milk and eggs after the power goes out?
Nothing more than what I usually have in my house. I have always owned vehicles that are able to conquer the elements without issue, plus half the fun is the adventure!!
We have enough on hand at all times to last quite a while! ~~ grnspot
Shout out from the "Shore". They tell me that Twinkies snack cakes go fast in Balmore area. Don't know for sure. Me I check for fuel, a little rock salt, put one snow shovel on the porch and one in my truck. Also make sure snow brushes are in the vehicles at the start of winter. Cover the outdoor ac units if icecicles are suspected. Dont want those damaged.

Living in the middle of rural nowhere, we keep on top of the foodstuff and TP. When we see a potential disruptive weather event we store extra water, pregrind some coffee beans, and I go out and purchase a lot of those 12oz hydration containers (just in case) ;).
On the Bob and Tom radio show, they figure that most people stay home and eat French Toast when it snows in the midwest. Why else would everyone buy Milk, bread, and eggs?

People are so silly!
Same here in NJ !! The stores are swampped just before a snow storm ! And if your low on milk or bread, you best get to the store ASAP. Cause they will be sold out real quick.

The local news covers the grocery stores just before every stinking storm. It's very funny to watch. :fing32:

ALways have a couple weeks worth of food around, the generator is full and generally 10 gal of gas and 10 of diesel always around in the winter. Water is from a cistern and usually at min 2 week reserve and we are on a grid road that is a bus route so it is always plowed within a day of a storm. And having 2 4x4's dosen't hurt either. So we just sit back and enjoy the snow.

The only thing I was short on for our freak October snow storm was 9 volt batteries for the alarm clock radio. I paid 6 dollars for one :banghead3

I can't argue with stocking up on the perishables, and why would anyone argue the importance of TP? I should probably fill up my second 5 gal gas can today in case we get hammered again by surprise like last time.

Many people run out at the last minute for groceries. (Maybe they're the people who eat out every night :D). So much so that the local TV stations usually run stories of the madhouse adventures.

I try to keep the pantry and freezer fully stocked at all times. If I happen to need something I have always had a 4x4.

I'll do a last minute sweep of the house to see what we may need. I have a freezer full of meat, a few boxes of cereal, so I may get some milk if I'm low. But I'll charge the batteries for my cordless drill set because the set has a flashlight. Then I'll make sure I have enough gas for my generator and rider with the snowthrower attachment. So in most cases, I end up buying gas and sometimes milk and/or something to drink.

My wife was a clerk in the local grocery store about ten years ago...people would stock up before a snow storm ,,and would also stock up in the summer ,before a thunder storm??? :dunno:people are nuts,,,this is michigan ,we get snow every winter,,,it's not like it is a surprise we get snow storms.

As others have said , I keep a stock of food canned and frozen on hand all the time , as for needing groceries It may be others live far from a store and don't keep a few days stock so they are likely to hit the stores just before a storm in case they are home bound for a couple of days . I have always lived very close to grocery stores so even if I could not drive I could walk .
The one that gave me a chuckle were people who back before streaming movies on their pc or cable movies on demand were available, would grab a few movies from the local video store when bad weather was predicted like a hurricane or major ice or snow storm when you knew in your heart that there was a good chance the power would go out and of course it did and they ended up returning them un-watched .

Nothing other than gas for the tractor/snowblower. I can't remember the last time I've been snowed in for more than 24 hours here in IL. And as others have said, I've got a 4 x 4 truck, and have never had that much of a problem with getting around. It's not like I live in Alaska or parts of New England where you guys get "feet" of snow at a time. In this day and age I just don't see how people have much of a problem getting whatever they need after a storm, there are more snow plows around now than there ever have been before, and most towns are pretty good about cleaning up. Of course there's always an exception to the rule.
