What do the numbers mean?

I was wondering if anyone knew the meaning behind the model numbers.

The one part that I have surmised is the last digit corresponds with HP. For example, a 222 has a 12HP engine, at 224, has a 14HP.

I know the series, i.e. the 200/3000 series has 12" wheels, and the 400/4000 series has 16" wheels, but I don't think wheel size factors into the model number.

That's all I can figure though.. Any help would be appreciated, as I like to understand these type of things.

Thanks!!!:thThumbsU

I meant do the numbers mean something specifically?

Maybe gear ratio's or something like that, or is it just like a series number? i.e. 2nd series for the 200's, 3rd series for the 3000 line in Ingersoll.

Also the second number, does it have a meaning? Or are/were they just repeating the first... 220,222,224 sounds better than 20,22,24..:dunno:

I guess it's the finance background wanting the numbers to mean something specific.

Here's a good example, the re-badged 3000 series Ingy's for Massey Ferguson made some sense, a 218 had an 18HP engine.
