What do I have here?

I picked this up from my neighbor. I believe it is a 74, but can anybody verify that for me? The information on the tractor is a GIL-33185A Then under that are the numbers 1985017A1

It has the 16 HP Briggs, model 326437 0135-03. I can't find any information about that combo.

It came with a second set of rear wheels with the turf tread, a front blade, mower deck, single plow and disk harrow. He also had the original Owners Manual, Parts List, and the individual manuals for all the implements.

I paid $100.00 for it.

They said that it ran but it now has some electrical problems. So I may be coming back here asking for advice on the whole electrical and charging system.

A couple of questions.
Can you buy replacement decals for this thing?
What are the official colors for this, as I would like to buy the correct color.

Thanks Steve

Hi samahi72, I'm thinking it newer than a 72, maybe a late 70's or early 80's, what is the engines S/N? The 16 variable-speed 16 I have is a 1976 per the engine S/N and it had the the bug eye headlight vs your that has headlight in the grill. Looks like it all there and you did good with all the implements can't help you with the correct colors.

I was just looking at the Owners Manual and it says on the footer 11-74 Part Number 32077. So I am thinking that it is a 1974. My serial number on the engine is 7501091. I just got done looking it up and the engine was built in January 9th, 1975. So I now I know what the engine is, now I need to find the year of the chasis.

Well I've researched more and I'm thinking your tractor is more like a 74 ish and that mine is more like a 72 model yr. There isn't a lot of information available on these tractors.
Your tractor was made by Gilson Tractor Co. for Montgomery Ward. (hence the GIL serial no.) Lawnboy later bought out Gilson, and then Toro bought Lawnboy. You can email Toro and get a owners and parts manual for it. They sent me one for free when I had the tractor listed in my sig. Those tractors are beasts. I only got rid of mine because I switched to all Case tractors for the ease of
interchangeable parts.

Cool tractor. I do have the owners manual and parts manual for it. The previous owner kept everything. I just can't find anything that specifically says what year it is, although I believe it is a 74 as there is an 11-74 on the bottom of the pages of the owners manual. Do you know if you can get replacement decals?

Thanks for getting back to me. What you say does make sense as the engine code on mine says that it was made on January 9,1975. So I am thinking that it is either a 74 or a 75.

Hi wurkenman, thanks for the information on manual etc. so what year do you think his tractor is? Have you seen the pics on my MW 16 I posted if so what year do you think mine is? Also as I posted there is a fellow interested in buying the MW 16 and since the only thing I got with the tractor was the mower deck I'll let it go as finding equipment will be a challenge plus like you posted I have a couple of Sears Suburban / Ropers and keeping one line is easier.

Not a lot of records were kept on these things. The best guess would be by going with he engine. The 16 single briggs is a real work horse and I believe Napa still has parts available for them. For stickers might try Maple Hunter. I know he does a lot of tractors, but not sure on the MW.

The Bug Eye tractors like the blue one were the last style made. The straight hood ones were previous to those. The blue is hydro and the yellow ones are gear driven. There are a multitude of attachments for these if you search hard enough. There is even a front mount mulcher/composter. The tiller you have is rare just for the fact the drive shaft is there. Most of the drives for the tillers seem to get lost.
One draw back to working on these is the fact that the front axle pivot is cast into the oil pan for the engine. Took me 5 hours to pound out the pin to get my engine out and fix a "mouse problem". On the back side of the axle there is about a 1/2 inch hole to drive the pivot pin out. and not much room to swing a hammer.

Yep I found that out I also had to remove the engine I was lucky the pin can out easily but removing the engine from the frame was a real learning experience. That's interesting about the blue and yellow colors. Yep that big 16 B&S is a horse and it is heavy to lug around. but it sure runs nice at least once I got it all tuned up.
When I reinstalled the engine and front axle I installed the set screw and tightened it then went to tighten the lock nut and the darn set screw broke off down in the hole so thats the way it is for now.

Do you know what the official color is for the blue and white? I want to restore it and I don't want to match the blue in case it is faded. Same goes with the white. It appears to be an off shade instead of a pure white.

Great information, very appreciated.

"I was just looking at the Owners Manual and it says on the footer 11-74 Part Number 32077."

I have a hunch 11-74 is the print date.
Manual is PN 32077???
Love it! exactly the next project I would be looking for. <100 to start, and a challange to restore. Looks like you are well on your way. :trink40:
Samahi72 - If you can find a blue part and a white part that are not sun faded & weathered (IE: inside the hood, or from underneath), I think you can take them to an O'Reilly Auto parts that handles automotive paints. They can color match & custom mix you up a batch of each. I'm not sure, but I think someone told me that they also will fill you some 'rattle cans'. Cannot talk about costs, but I don't think it was all that expensive.
Most paint dealers now have this computer matching capability, and will usually check it for free. Good Luck
