Mills usually want 18" or bigger, these are only about 14". I have several that are close to 30", I'm real tempted to take them down. But, they are some of the big ones the kids want to keep, and it's their house. Some of those logs might be worth some cash depending on where you're located. Cherry for sure.
I need a brush-hog.On the auction there were 8 more barns and 2 other fields with trucks, trailers big tractors etc. All I saw was one Echo 650 chainsaw I'd like to bid on. Going to the big Baltimore gun show instead.
Smaller diameter and length would be of interest to my friend who made traveling bed to work with his 15” bandsaw. He can handle up to maybe 4’ lengths and run it like a mini sawmill. He’s cut a 19”D x 21”L piece of white oak in 1/2” slices for plaques. He can run them in his CNC router table. Learning computer program, speeds-n-feeds for various woods, cutter types (V, ball, straight), and such for putting lettering on a plaque he’s making for me. I made the initial model and sent it to him. He’s done some wood working pieces, but is learning as he goes since he just got the CNC running since he retired. Some of those logs might be worth some cash depending on where you're located. No clue on the actual total, it’s been so inconsistent and windy that there isn’t any good measure. We normally get 30-40” of snow with a couple good blizzards every year but this year I wouldn’t be shocked if we double that. In Feb Sioux Falls was on track to have the 3rd snowiest winter on record. March has helped stay on that track. I have some serious concerns about storage at this point. I easily ate we are one 6” snow fall from being out of room and having to start loosing portions of the driveway. If I have time time when the wind dies down, I’ll attempt to measure the couple large piles. One is over 8’ tall and covers an area of ~50x70.@mrbeef What's your snow total for the season (so far), and how does that compare to "historical average" and recent years?
Mike
There are many times I miss my woodmizer sawmill, and I hope to buy another someday. I see so many people with a couple decent logs that regular mills won’t touch. I’d love to make it my retirement hobby… make a few dollars, slice up some nice lumber and have fun doing it.Mills usually want 18" or bigger, these are only about 14". VERY cool. I'd love to see pics and video of that small mill setup.Smaller diameter and length would be of interest to my friend who made traveling bed to work with his 15” bandsaw. Real interesting! I like learning about things, but prefer the computer design side. Especially if I can find people who have the cutting equipment and have the expertise in that particular medium (steel, wood, plastic, etc.) I’ll try to get some pictures of each. I’ve posted my steel experiences for my plasma cut skid extenders and 54” front mount dethatcher.
Makes sense. You've got an incredible snowfall this year to handle, your green investment is paying off for sure!I’ve been playing with the herd a good bit. The 4066 has gone through 15 gallons of diesel in the last 10 days, I’ve officially doubled my PTO hrs in one winter (compared to the previous 4). Lots of time just sitting and watching the snow fly.

In the evenings I’ve been working on tearing apart a 400. That’s been an interesting process. Having lots of experience with 140-430, the 400 is an odd ball in every way. Learning lots though, it will be good if I ever have to change out something on my other 400. This is about all that is left, hopefully tonight I can get the differential apart and start cleaning up in preparation for the next victim.

I have a 445 that has a bad fuel pump, no deck, and terrible cosmetically, good machine otherwise. A perfect candidate for parts. Bought it a couple years ago from a local flipper that took it on trade. Got it wedged into the shop last night late and it is ready and waiting for me when I wrap up the 400. Dribble some gas into the throttle body and made sure it ran, just a bad fuel pump.

The 4066 is still the go to for snow removal and I never really expected that to change. Horsepower and width gives the 4066 the nod each time, 74” blower and 52 PTO hp vs 60” blower and ~30 PTO hp. More importantly, my wife loves the 1585, which is the reason I bought it. She’s helped me move snow a couple times and she just rocks out in the cab and stays warm. I’ve used it a couple times, it’s a really nice machine and you can certainly tell the 31 hp in the 1445 vs the 38 hp in the 1585. We’ve talked about taking the blower off and installing the broom for the garage apron but haven’t done it yet. Depending on how bit the drifts are with the current winter storm, the 1585 might come out tonight to clear some snow. The 1585 will really shine in the summer and mowing duty. I am looking forward to that!!!
As much as I look forward to the fall and the switch over from grass, to leaf, to snow duty, and I dream of big snow storms to attack with my JDs, I also get excited about spring right about now and start making a mental list of the little fixes that are needed and start getting excited about making the TDG, (Team Dream Green), ready for summer duty.Given the wind today I opted to not move snow tonight…. I’ll probably regret that in the morning when it’s -5F and still blowing. 😳 One of us has to go to town tomorrow so the driveway will need to be cleaned at some point. They shut the interstates down tonight at 6pm. My guess is they won’t open until well into the afternoon tomorrow.
This winter is getting on my nerves….. I have a new trailer that should arrive in 2-3 weeks and I won’t have anywhere to put it when I get it home. Over an acre of gravel driveway and I’m not going to have a place to store a trailer. 😭
So tonight I took my frustrations out on a poor JD 445 that has been chilling for a couple years in the shed. Got the cosmetics off and tomorrow should be a good day to test all the components and see what I might be able to salvage, keep, or put up for sale.
That looks pretty good from here, why are you parting it out?So tonight I took my frustrations out on a poor JD 445 that has been chilling for a couple years in the shed. Bad fuel pump, no deck, and lots of electrical hacks. I bought it a couple years ago to part out. Only now finding the time to do it. I have 3 more to do after this (316, 318, and a 322) and then I have to tackle the combine!!! That will be a fun project. Glad I have a new toy coming to help with the combine tear down. That looks pretty good from here, why are you parting it out?

And I didn't even use my snowblower once this year. Weird, Weird....Weird weather!!!Here is a quick video on my snow storage and a few pictures.
Here is some pictures for perspective. The first one I am about 10' off the ground. A majority of the snow I am standing on has been through the snow blower at least twice, so it is very compacted.

I'm about 3' off the ground here. From the road you can only see the top 2' of the tractor cab.
