Yesterday was take-down-the-holiday-wreaths-day at Arlington Nat’l Cemetery. We have helped lay wreaths in the past, but this was my first time on clean-up duty.
The old pros used hockey sticks, long poles, and even lengths of rope to collect large bunches of wreathes. I just used my arms, which was not near as effective/efficient. Live and learn - - next time I will come prepared.
The turnout for clean-up was solid, but nothing like for the laying of the wreaths. I was worried we’d be there all day. But it was impressive to see what a swarm of eager humans can accomplish when all focussed on the same singular objective. We finished sooner than I thought possible - - just a couple hours into it.
Still, it occurred to me how much more efficient the whole operation could be if assisted by a large fleet of garden tractors towing carts. Maybe a potential volunteer opportunity for we garden tractor enthusiasts?
Anyway, whether laying the wreaths or cleaning-up after the holidays, it is a moving experience to walk among these hallowed grounds. So much history and sacrifice.
