Hey everyone. Awesome forums. First time poster. My dad in law bought a zero turn cub cadet and gave me his 86' JD318. It has been well maintained, some paint scrapes but no major visual defects. Motor seems strong along with the drivetrain, deck raises and lowers fine. No obvious leaks anywhere. It has the 50" deck but no other attachments, just the one pto switch on the dash. Lights all work, brakes need some adjusting and it appears that one of the springs on the brakes is broken on the left hand rear. The only problem is you can mow all day long with no problem, kill it to take a break and the mower will crank right up but the blades will not engage until it has cooled down which takes awhile. My question is has anyone had this issue? Also I want to give it a thorough tune up despite its routine maintenance and was wondering what oil and filters you recommend. I would like to repaint it but the paint job is still in fairly good shape. First time JD owner and from what I have read about the 318 I stumbled onto a goldmine. Well thanks in advance for any help.

:Welcome1: Welcome aboard Hood! You got a helluva machine for free and it's definitely worth fixin up.. The clutch problem is a weird one tho.. try going thru the electrical on it when it happens again.. My ol' man left me a 4310 with an 8' loader on it but it was in a lot better shape!!:homer:
Welcome to the forum! :Welcome1:
It sounds like the PTO clutch is out of adjustment. Im pretty sure its supposed to be .020 gap. There is another thread on here, Same as yours. Gary

I will second the air gap issue. A simple adjustment will fix that. :thanku: :wwp: :wwp: :wwp:
Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you.
Heres the other link that tells the .020 gap. Gary

Clutch gap should be 0.018", but 0.020" is so close, it will probably be fine. Make sure to do this when the engine is cold.
Gee...I'm sorry you were GIVEN a 318...
You should give that away to me...and then spend several months pursuing one on your own...so you will appreciate it EVEN MORE...:D

Oh yeah...welcome to the MTF...;)

You really will appreciate it more if you search for one like the rest of us are doing.

And if you don't want to give it to him, you can always give it to me:thThumbsU

Anyone think he's going to fall for this? :i_praying

robbinthahood,

:MTF_wel: and congrats on the free gift.:congrats: and remember :wwp:
Yeah, you certainly is robbinthahood walking out with a deal like that!

Of course now you have to take good care of his tractor as well as his daughter.

Go ahead and drop the money on the service manual unless he gave you that too!

Fluids, filters, and a good greasing are in order. There are 3 fittings on the driveshaft and the front one can be a bear to get to unless you have a narrow walled nipple on your grease gun.

And welcome to the forum. We'll try not to hate you too bad. LOL Free 318 indeed.:Disgus: :wwp:

:eek:mg: I may not be a John Deere guy exactly, but man...FREE??????
I don't know how, or care how you gotta hold your mouth to catch fish, but I sure would like to know how you hold your mouth to get free tractors!:fing32:
You have a great tractor there! And like has been asked....where are the pics?
Ill get some pics taken and posted on here. I guess takin care of his daughter for 12 years paid off. I was wrong about the year, I ran the serial and it matches an 84. It is a lil high hour at 1345 hrs but runs like a champ. He works offshore so when he comes back in I will hopefully have it looking different than when he gave it away. Dont want it lookin too good or he may want it back...lol. I want to do some painting on it and was wondering what a yellow grill would look like instead of the green it is now, or should I keep it stock. I have seen several with black grills instead of the green that mine has. I found a decal kit for around $30 but dont know if that is high or low. Would it hurt seafoaming with that many hours on the engine? Would also like to clean up the headlight lenses since they are pretty dull. Was wondering if a headlight polishing kit like you get for your car would work? I will probably keep having questions as I go along. Thanks again for all your comments and input. Will probably get the pto thing tended to this weekend at the latest. One things for sure it sure does crank fast, even feels like your driving a real tractor. I know my dad is real impressed with it, tried to trade me his 20 horse Husky but I readily declined. Well enough on my rant and I work 2nd shift so my posts may not be as quick. Have a good day.
One more thing, I have the operators manual and the deck operators manual but nothing with any schematics. Am wanting some kind of front bumper, I may fabricate one, I work in the tool and die department at my job so making something isnt a problem, its just getting it out the door. They kind of frown on making personal stuff.
