Used 54" snowblower find...

Called JD deer asking if craigslist 47" snowblower would fit my x750. That one was set up for a 1 series....would need different hitch for my x series.

Dealer said long time customer was looking to sell his 47 SB, came off x series, so should work great. Customers wife going in to assisted living, he not far behind. Wanted to sell his JD stuff now...

Of course I was interested. Went to pick it up, and surprised to see that it was a 54 inch snowblower. It was all there, snowblower quick hitch and drive shaft.

$2k and it was on my trailer coming home. Doesn't look like it's been used a lot

I'm stoked! Bring on the snow!!

Nice find! Watch the poly impeller. I hear they wear quickly. Look into replacing it with the metal one and doing the flapper mod.

What'd he want for the tractor?
Thanks for the idea on the flapper. And the advice on the impeller. Picture above is my tractor with the snowblower in front of my shed. I picked up the snowblower from the John Deere dealer

Great deal and nice looking lawn too!
You got a pretty much new dual stage snowblower for 2k, Congrats!
Great find you don't see many 54" blowers for sale.
Well played

Why don't we see more 54s for sale??

For whatever reason Deere sells a lot more 47 snowblowers than the 54". In my case I would have real trouble fitting it in the shed, especially next to the other tractor with the 54" blade.

I actually have 2 and plan on listing one this fall when the temps cool down.

OP.. I took my 54” and made it what I call the “ultimate”. LOL. Metal impeller with flappers, 36t sprocket, chute rotation mod and and electric chute deflector control. Highly recommended any or all mods, it throws snow an impressive Distance without any clogging no matter how wet the snow is.

Nice score! Used 47 or 54 blowers are hard to find no matter what. Great price too! Congrats!
OP,

Try it before worrying about swapping to the metal impeller and flapper mod. Performance is mostly very good. The used (1 hr) X730 I found for my son had a 47” blower with it. When my used (95 hr) X738 came with a 54” blower, I initially thought I would swap with him since he has a lot more driveway to clear, but after using it, there’s no way I’m giving it up. :tango_face_grin: It’s nice having a little clearance between the snow and the tractor tires.

I can’t see much wear on the plastic impeller in mine and the performance is okay for now, better than okay most of the time. And on your X750, you will likely do what I do, lots of neighbors driveways and enjoy yourself the whole time. Even though you don’t have 4WD (HFWD), with chains you won’t have any issue with traction. After you power through snow as deep as the blower a couple of times, you will fully appreciate your tractor and blower even more. Experience can be a great teacher.

You may want to consider the LP41114 soft cab though. I tried without for a year, since my son always ran without. I’m getting too old for that much snow all over me and the tractor. A hard cab would certainly be nice, but $5K is a little steep and they are more work to install/remove. The soft cab works pretty well keeping the snow off and it certainly kept me warmer while clearing the 16” snow from the 12 driveways in the neighborhood last winter.

Enjoy!!!!

The 47's are more popular.I'll see 15 47's for sale before I'll see a 54.
Update: first winter season (2019-2020) saw only limited use for the 54" snow blower -- I think a total of three times...but two of those were light snow, less than 3 inches...I just could not resist : )

This past winter was a completely different story (2020-2021). I logged ten hours blowing snow for eight different storms. The 54" performed wonderfully! Wet, heavy snow was not a problem. Neither was drifted, densely packed snow. I was even able to power through piles of snow the county plows pushed in front of driveways. Not a problem.

I was worried the snow blower would not get right down to the pavement. This was not an issue at all. Previous owner had this set up well to scrape right down to the pavement.

I'm getting better installing and removing the mowing deck / snow blower, wheel weights, chains.

👍 That’s what I’ve found with mine. Glad you gave it a good test and I still haven’t seen much wear with the plastic impeller.

My 54" SB on my 2007 X748 is now 10 seasons old. I live in a lake effect snow area south of Buffalo, NY. We don't always get a lot of snow but I'm sure we are above or well above average (including 6+ feet in about 3 days a few of years ago). I have had no problems with my 54" or the plastic impeller. It is a sturdy implement that I highly recommend to those needing a SB. Just add the chute rotation mod to complete it.

Nicely done. Looking for a 54 or a 47 I can put wings on for my 2025r. Already have quick hitch. Are you posting your 54 here? Little far from me though.

Unfortunately I sold it shortly after I posted about it. I’ve noticed them starting to pop up for sale now that the weathers turning… Now’s the time to be vigilant, anything decently priced might go quick. Good luck!
Someday I’d love to move up to the 2025 TLB.. happy with it?
