I thought I had it figured out, and it would have all worked as planned but I could not, for the life of me, get the muffler off. I had it unbolted from the head, but there just wasn't enough room to get it off the bolts.

I figured if I could have raised the engine half inch off the frame it would come off. Removing the 4 bolts that held the engine down was easy but then there was the dreaded PTO, and at that I threw in the towel. I don't have the tools to tackle that.

I even called John Deere and talked to a mechanic and he assured me the muffler would come off without fooling with the motor. He said he knew it would: yeah, maybe with a crowbar.

If you know a way let me know; otherwise it goes to John Deere.

Thanks, Jimbochap: Gee,that looks familar.

That threaded stud, no. 4, if I could get that out, it would be easy to remove the muffler. I actually tried. I put a double nut on it and tried to turn it out, but I couldn't get it to budge (didn't really know for sure it was a stud at the time and was afraid I would twist it off)

Those two attachment flanges on the tank, bolt to, and ride on, frame rails, and prevent the tank from being lowered at all.
Pb Blaster on it and let it sit overnight
I JUST PUT A NEW ONE ON MY 225 . I took the drive belt off ,which let me move the motor forward about a half an inch, then i wedged a screwdriver under the front of motor between frame and motor. It took a little fine manuevering but i did get it on in about 30 minutes. Hope this helps.

Yes, that is very helpful, Thank you! But i have about decided to take it to the John Deere dealer. I think now if mine did the same it might come off, but there are some others issues that might require expert attention, so I think I will bite the bullet in the hope it can be all put to right; that and I am 75 Years old and I know my limitations.

Thanks again, Clay
*Thinks to self*

*huh, shoulda thought of that earlier*
