Unicorn Log Splitter

I'm considering buying a unicorn log splitter from the gentleman I bought my 49 blower off of. He used it on his 140 several years back. It is in excellent condition, wasn't used much and kept inside. He has the jack stands to prop the tractor up and everything. Does anyone have one of these? I don't burn wood anymore but just think it's a unique attachment to own. I could always find an excuse to use it if I had to justify the purchase to my wife... Anyway, just curious if anyone has one and thoughts on value.

Thanks
Mike

The only way to justify it to your wife is that you will be gone soon after operating it.

I bought one, painted it, put it on the PTO, looked at what it could do,

and SOLD it!!

Man if that picture doesn't scare you, you are too young!! :praying:

Well I do have good life insurance so she may encourage me to buy it... The one I'm looking at bolts on to the hub after removing the wheel. The owner said it worked quite well but added that he wouldn't suggest using it alone and that one should be very careful when using it.
Yeah, they have a reputation for being unforgiving to human error. It's an exposed, spinning pto auger that you work around in close proximity with your hands, arms, legs, clothing. "Look ma, no hands (left)!"

I prefer the slow moving hydraulic-ram splitters, myself.

That thing looks like something out of a James Bond movie!

i have never seen one of those. just youtubed it. it kinda looks like a death trap... not to mention you'd have to be bent over the entire time.
If the price is reasonable, I would snap up a Unicorn. Not to use, just to have.
I always thought these were cool. (Pic taken from Bing search from MTF member.)

I can get it for a couple hundred. I probably will this spring as he's not trying to sell it.
My BIL has one that he puts on his truck and it'll split some wood. Had a chunk of wood come up and catch his arm one time and he was off work for a week!
What I don't understand is the OP said he does not burn wood any more but if he had it he would fine something to do with it.:dunno:

Why risk life or limb just to have something and do something if you don't even have a need for what is produced (split wood)?:dunno::dunno:

There must be something you can get with the money that would be of real value or use...

A buddy of mine had one several years ago that attached to one of the rear wheels on his truck. It did work well and would split anything you could throw at it.Looks more intimidating than actually working with one.Only downside I recall was being low and hard on the back.

About 35 years ago I bought a screw splitter with a Briggs motor and a clutch. It was definitely unforgiving. I never got hurt but it came close a number of times. A big locust log would stall it and I’d have to chain saw the log off. I sold it after one season and got a hydraulic one.

I would only buy it as a novelty.

That thing is scary even to look at. It belongs in the Smithsonian.
