I’m a long time reader, first time poster.

I just wanted to drop in and let you, Tudor, Charles, and many others know that your posts and threads are still there.
I’ve spent several days following a lot of you guys around on FEL posts. I’m a seasoned industrial maintenance tech, and I’m just wow’d by your knowledge and expertise.

I recently aquired a hammered out mtd 995 (I think?) it says cennex 18hp hydrostatic on the side. Neighbor gave it to me because the reverse is too slow, steering’s held together with zip ties, but she starts and runs good!

should be a fun little project whenever I get time to work on it, just wish I had the funds to get started on a FEL build.

this community is a wealth of knowledge and people like all you are diamonds in the rough. I learned alot just from reading your content.
don’t ever change.

Welcome!
Lots of guys here very well versed on the 990.
As for slow reverse, look closely for worn linkage bushings and caked on debris limiting the linkage’s travel.
Very powerful and under rated machines IMHO, basically indestructible chassis and transmission based on my experience with them.

yeah there’s a lot of linkage problems sowhen I get time I’m gonna take everything apart, one at a time, clean and grease and repair as needed. I’m pretty confident it’s a linkage problem because the steering is hose clamped together, the drive lever doesn’t even travel the full length of the slot, and the brake pedal will throw your back out trying to pull the pedal back up.
If I can get her tip-top I want to make a backhoe and loader out of her eventually when I get a better welder.

Looks like a worthy project tractor, good luck!
I'm wondering about the 3-point hitch. I don't know anything about the MTD tractors, but it looks like a standard cat-0 feature that's been cobbled and re-worked with the same expertise as the zip tie steering guy. Is there a hydraulic cylinder underneath that operates the hitch? That looks like an old-school real garden tractor!

I believe it’s factory. I think he bolted it all together for some reason, but it does appear to be a standard car 0.
Hydraulic works. Pto I’m not seeing decent engagement so I think the pto spindle is stuck.
Drives good in forward in low and high, but pretty sketchy as far as feeling safe pulling up to a garage door without accidentally blowing through it.
