I would bet it was connected to a safety for reverse. Many of the ones in last 15-20 years won't let you go in reverse with mowing deck running.

would anyone know what the electrical connector is that's connected to the speed control lever? it was disconnected on this second hand mower, and apparently some sort of safety or reverse switch?
just trying to verify before i put it to it's first use for me, and whether it needs to be connected.
