Transmission Danger Signs

I removed a transmission yesterday from a John deere x300 with 320 hours on it. The complaint was the warmer the tractor got, the slower it would go. It also had no power on inclines.

This is very typical of a hydro that has been overheated and has a scored cylinder block assy

This customer used his tractor for plowing snow, and pulling a loaded cart behind the tractor. You will notice that the oil inside the transmission came out the vent because it got so hot. This transmission is not made for this type of use. This is not covered under warranty.

I have another one to do today I will post pics of it as well.

Doesn't John Deere make a plow attachment for x300 and put a hitch connector on the back? But you're not supposed to use them?

Good point!
Why Deere did this is beyond me.. NO, I repeat... NO.... Select Series should have ever had anything below the K66!

I agree, at least the K58.

I too would like to know what was done out of spec? You cannot pull a loaded cart?

I C deere lists a snow plow, a blower and of course a cart as available attachments.

You sound like a dealer, what is the scoop??? Deere or owner error??

Unless you can show abuse how can deere not be responsible? (just curious and trying to learn, not trying start a fight BTW)

Seems like a tranny temp gauge would be a great addition, does anybody make one?? Could replace the oil dipstick...

:thanku:

I agree with all the posters here and also would like an answer to this !

And how can they deny a claim for this if they spec it out to do these tasks ?

And to pose another question if how are you supposed to know when your pushing the axle to hard until it starts showing symptoms ?

I think JD and all of theses companies need to go back and rethink how they write a warranty or the way they spec out their products.

Seems to me that one hand doesn't know what the other is doing !

I agree mine went out at 85 hrs and I never plowed bladed or pulled a cart. I did pull a lawn roller and a small spreader with 25lbs of seed in it.

Shame on you for doing that, how dare you use it for what it's intended ! :00000060:

Reocurring theme anymore: Market these tractors highlighting all the functions they can perform then don't back them under warranty when they do. Shame on John Deere. Why don't they just be honest and tell you what they are and aren't capable of??? I have a x320 with the k58 and do nothing than mow the lawn with it. Truefully, I am scared to do anything more with it. Hate to say it, but the x300 is looking like nothing more than a L series tractor at twice the cost. What good is the garden tractor frame, Kawasaki engine, 11 gauge deck when the transaxles are biting the dust same time as the L series? As for the guy who took his trans into the shop, I bet he has way more into it than if he would have bought a new one from TT and installed it himself.

Wow! That tranny looks like it was molded out of tin foil... lol!
John Deere loves "tin foil", and they know how to market it to their avanatage....dollars in the coffers.
JD shouldn't allow attachments or implements to be sold for this tractor; and it should come with no towing point!
thanks Grasshopper saved me some typing !!

I know we have beaten this horse to death on the L series but this is beyond ridiculous.
We spend all that time telling them to step up to a X300 series..... For What !!

Just make sure you don't put 50 lbs in the spreader, I'd hate to see you blow the tranny in this one.

J/K sorry, couldn't resist.
I originally looked at the LA 145 - LA165's, stepped up to a X300. So going +1 up may not be good either. :praying:
I feel bad for the 300 owners who have had trannies go belly up. Deere should step up and at least install K58's free under warranty and only charge the difference in the actual cost over what the K46 is for the folks out of warranty.
