Trading up to B2320 from BX1860

Had my BX for over a year now. Have 125 hours on it. It has done everything I've asked of it and been a great little tractor. We had a really mild winter with hardly any snow up until a couple weeks ago. We got hit with several feet at once, but it wasn't our usual light dry powder. It was wet heavy crap. Add to that sustained winds in the 35 MPH (45 gusts) zone for several days and we ended up with huge hard-packed drifts.

Have a 50" Buhler 3 point snow blower. Seemed like the BX was struggling. Belching lots of black smoke and bogging down. Took forever to get out to the highway on the first cut (1/8 mile). Had to run it at WOT the whole time.

So I started thinking I want to upsize a bit. Looking at trading the BX for a B2320. I love my BX, but I'm just afraid I'm working it too hard.

Will 5 extra horsepower make a noticeable difference? I've crunched some preliminary numbers and the 2320 is about as high as I can go payment wise.

Sounds like you might not be too happy with the BX1860. If that's the case then sell it now with the low hours and get the B2320. Life's too short to deny yourself. As you may know, I added a B3030 for snow removal due to the cab. Comparing the hp in the B3030 to the BX25 is night and day. However, if your only complaint with the BX1860 was problems with big snow, maybe you should get out earlier in the storm, then clear for a second and final time. Another upside to the B2320 is that down the road you can always add a Kubota backhoe--try that on the BX1860. Meanwhile, here's wash day at my house.
Edit: Added neighbor's L3600 by mistake next to the BX25.

Todd, I remember when you bought the 1860. I always run the 50" blower at near-wide open throttle, which is what is recommended by Kubota. You will find that any blower will bog somewhat in heavy, wet snow. If it is throwing black smoke you need to slow down some and let the engine get back to speed. I don't think the extra five HP will make a big difference under those circumstances.

Now if you just want a new toy, that's a different strory. :D
Just a thought but if all you really want is 5 more hp, then a BX2360 would fit the bill, or go up to the BX2660 for even more hp. I would guess (without looking) that those two machines would price out at or below the B2320. Now if a bigger framed machine is also a must, by all means, get the B2320. If I ever trade up to a B, my thinking would be to go to the 2620 if at all possible, but of course a budget is a budget. Good luck deciding.

Todd,

A couple of comments. First, that sounds like a pretty major storm you threw at the little 1860. But, where you live I imagine serious snowfall is a big part of the equation. So I could see where more grunt would come in useful.

Second, if you do decide to trade for the B2320, your timing couldn't be better. Not only is there a $700 rebate running, but for the B Series there is an additional $300 rebate if the tractor is coupled with an FEL. So there is a total $1K rebate available for cash payers. Even if you plan to finance, the $300 rebate is still available if you take the 0%. So that's some pretty good incentive there.

Third, as for the "5 extra horsepower". I think you will notice a much bigger difference than suggested by the numbers. The reason I say this, is because the B2320 actually uses the same engine as the BX2660 -- the D1005 (1.0 liter). The reason it has a lower HP rating in the B than the BX, is because it is "rated" at a lower rpm (2800 vs 3200). But in this configuration, it makes more torque than the BX version of the same engine. So, it will be running slower (quieter) yet giving more torque than the BX2660's engine. I'd guess you would notice more difference between the BX1860 and B2320 than you would between the BX1860 and BX2660.

Good luck whatever you decide. Keep us posted.

Yeah, that's what I do. That's why it took forever to get the first pass done. After that I could take just a partial bite of what it would handle and make more passes. Just worried I'm shortening it's life by working it at the top of it's capabilities.

My dealer says very little cost difference. They don't even stock the bigger BX's because they say most everyone just moves up to the B for the minor cost difference.

Thanks, very good to know. I'm looking at doing the 48 months 0%. Went and looked at the tractor today. The salesman stood me up:mad:
45 minute drive each way for nothing. I had forgotten how much bigger the B seems. Everything is so much "beefier".

Guess I'll just see what the very best offer they do and be firm on my budget. If they can't match it, I'll just stay with my BX.

Sounds like your dealer needs to do something to make that right for you. There is just no excuse for doing business like that. Not even a phone call to reschedule your visit? :tsk:
Oh he called me...while I was already standing in the dealership.

He did offer to bring the tractor to me and do the paperwork at my house. We hadn't even agreed to a price or trade on mine, so I think that's jumping the gun a bit. If we can work out a deal over the phone, I'll hold him to that offer.
I started out looking at a BX1860 with the 50" snowblower. Then I looked at the BX2360. Then the B2320. My dealer put the three side by side and I was sold on the B2320. The B was $500 more than the BX2360. No brainer.

Also, you gain an extra 4" of G.C. You could do an initial sweep with the blower raised.
I bought a B2320 last November and found it to ba a bit underpowered. I did have the backhoe, which worked great, but overall 23HP just didn't cut it. I also found it to be very unstable on hills. I replaced it with a B3300SU with BH and so far that's proven to be a much better fit for me.
Well we were able to do the deal. The B will get delivered tomorrow. Sounds like I got a free block heater thrown in too. Gave me what I owed on trade, got the 48 Mo. o APR at the payment I was budgeting for.

Can't wait to meet her.

Congrats!!:trink39:

Presumably you kept all your goodies? Looking at your list of attachments, it seems like almost everything will transfer over nicely to the B.

You must be psyched. Remember how this works: Lots of photos so the rest of us can live vicariously.
Congrats, glad it worked out. Ofcourse we're now expecting a good indepth review of the new machine, w/pics :D

Dave
I guess they did right by you after all. That's good news. Good luck with the new B. :trink40:

YOU *******, YOU MUST HAVE THE BEST WIFE IN THE WORLD! No just kidding , congrats. I would check out the snow blower situation because i believe it wil not fit the B model. If it does let me know because then me and my wife have some thing new to fight about. upgrading from a bx to a B. Have any hints on how ya sweet talked yours?
My blower is a rear 3 point so it fits the B just fine. Quick Hitch fit fine. Actually fits on the B better than it did on the BX. Didn't even have to modify the PTO shaft. I'll get pics up tonight.

Don't have one.:) Girlfriend doesn't have veto powers.

That and I promised to get her a new car this spring.:dunno:

Here are the pics. I never thought the BX felt small until I parked them right next to each other.

First impressions:

Everything is just much more robust than the BX. The power difference is noticable. Takes up much more room in the garage than I expected.

Advantage B2320: More comfortable. Rides better, seat has some suspension to it. Looks like it will be much easier to work on. Maintenance items are easier to get at. Like the way the cowl comes apart, even with the loader on it. Like the guages better with the real tach vs. the little LCD screen. 3PH has more range (obviously the tractor is taller and can have more range) making it easier to attach implements. Quieter overall. Not as much squeal from the hydraulics.

Advantage BX: I like the fuel tank fill location more on the BX. I like the bigger knob on the loader control. I think I actually prefer the loader control location on the BX. I could still get on and off both sides of the tractor. The location of the control on the B make it harder to get on and off the right side. The BX has better traction with the ag tires than the B does with the industrials. Shoudn't be a big issue, my property and road is totally flat. I think I like the 3PH control better on the BX in that it returns to neutral by itself, but this will probably be a wash once I get used to it. Clutch: seems odd the B has a clutch to change ranges and activate the PTO, where the BX doesn't need one. Again, I'm sure it will feel more natural as I spend more time on the B.

Haven't found anything that I don't like on the B. It's just going to take some retraining.

Wow, you didn't waste any time putting the B to work!

Thanks for the great comparison/review and the photos, especially the side-by-side. That gives a great perspective on the two. I would love to have a B, but there is no way it would ever fit my garage. Even the BX will be tight.

The BX1860 is one of the best values out there, but I think the same could be said for the B2320. You got a lot of tractor for the money. Both are great looking machines!
The new tractor looks good in there! I also went from using my dads BX1500 to my B. At first I wasn't sure about the loader handle location but once I put a few hours on it its second nature and easier than the forward mounted controls. My 3pt lever return to neutral so I'm thinking yours might be tight from being new or is a little out of adjustment?
Have fun with the new toy, you'll love it.
