Depends on what you are looking for. Is the Husky hydro? A good running 214 with deck is worth a couple hundred even if it is ugly.

I have been offered a trade for my 1987 john deere 214 for a 42 " cut husqvarna i was wanting some opionions on this trade the husqvarne is almost new with no damage the 214 is rusted and has several problems but will cut

well i have about a 1/2 acre city lot that all i do is mow that is including the house the jd is a 46 inch cut the husky is a 42 inch cut the varator is stuck on the 214
I suggest checking the model number, Husgvarna use Tuff Torq K46 on their lawnmower.
i just want a mower that i can get on and crank up with out any problems and cut my grass that will be simple to operate for my wife as well plus it has took me about 3 days to just find the deck belt for my 214 and then i had to order it
NOOO! get rid of that 214 and youll be sorry! maybe not "right away" but youll be sorry.
I have to say, i understand, totally about wanting to get a hydro drive, as i have 5 machines that are hydro, and using my father ilaws 214 this summer, well it just wasnt as nice ! that being said, for me being that mowing season is over just about(if i was in ur situation), so i would spend the next few months, tearing into the 214, and start fixing/replacing, and whatever else needs to be done, and lastly throw a coat of paint on, and when it comes time to mow againg, everyone will think i bought another , as it will be in tip top shape, and u might find that u enjoy bringing the old thing back to new condition, and u will have a machine, that will outlast the huskavarne, and the satisfation that u did a great job on the old machine! But, thats just me, good luck with whatever u decide !

Thing about it one minute,,,,,,,,,,, who will want to exchange an almost new lawn tractor for an old John Deere,,,,,,,, Hhhhhmmmm!
What is the benefit with that trade for both of you?
well i have thought about this for a while and i have seen this gentle man make some very poor choices when it comes to trades. i also received the 214 through an unbelievable trade i traded a non running craftsman for it
Trade the 214 then sell the Husvarna and then go get another used JD in better condition. A 318 would be good I think...
**** no!! I would never trade a great machine for a husky! Thats like tradeing a Ford F-350 for a Geo metro
If you don't want to invest the time and money to bring the JD up to snuff, do the trade. The Husqvarna is easy to operate, not near as intimidating as the JD.
But, the JD will still probably outlive the Husqvarna.

I would say it's up to what you really want and it sounds like you just want to mow your grass without fixing a tractor.

My 214 was my main mowing tractor for 11 years. In that time I completely went through the entire tractor, including a complete rebuild of the engine. I ran that tractor about 100 hours a year and loved every minute of it! The 214 in an incredible machine that admittedly may need more attention and knowledge from its owner than the husky of the week with bold new graphics! But you will never have to ask yourself...."I wonder if this thing will last?" It is already 30 years old! As far as parts for your 214, go to your local John Deere dealer or jdparts and get your parts. Who knows where you will get parts for that husky whatever. I would not even consider trading that 214 for that husky. I know how intimidating it can be trying to understand these little machines but it is not rocket surgery. Get a service manual and get to know your tractor a little bit and it will probably out last you. If you are not willing, or don't have the time, I guess you'll make the trade, but in the long run you will be giving up a lot and not getting very much. Just my 2 cents, Adam

Sacreligous as it may sound the trade may be the better option to get something that works for what you need. As long as you are willing to forfeit the garden tractor functionality of the 214 a hydro driven mower is likely to be more friendly to your wife. For my 3/4 acre suburban lot I did not find the 214 to be easy to mow with. The restricted right turning capability makes it challenging to navigate in tight spots.
I may be wrong, (happens a lot) but the 200 series tractors did not turn sharper in one direction than the other. I suspect some steering linkages are out of adjustment or there was some interference with a front wheel hitting the mowing deck and someone along the way adjusted it that way to avoid this. My 214 never had these issues. Adam
There are times I think I should have gone over my 214 rather than trade it in. Also liked the 15(?) forward speeds.:greendr:
