Tire chains/weights or both?

What's better, tire chains or weights on the tires. Or both together ? For soft dirt and mud.

Ooops, I was going to chime in on that with "both", but then I saw 'soft dirt', and all I've ever used is chains and weights on the white dirt (aka snow). Chains, weights and filled tires, only way to do the job with my little machines on snow and ice...
Oh yeah I forgot about filling the tires. What do you fill the tires with? Sand?
No, up here its either Calcium Chloride (heavy but corrosive, hard on your rims), windshield washer fluid (not as heavy, not as corrosive, cheaper and easier to work with) or RimGuard (a liquid beet byproduct, safest to use, heavier than windshield washer fluid, but more expensive and hard to obtain in some areas). Up here, the biggest criteria is that it not freeze, because driving around with a pair of big ice cubes strapped to your tractor is not good! :) Does "Ca" stand for California? You might not have to worry about the freezing thing, but you'll probably want to still go for a liquid. One problem I could foresee with sand is any bit of moisture inside the tire/tube and the sand is going to clump and thump around as you drive. Not QUITE as bad as the fellow who filled his tires with cement, but probably close... The other biggie would be how would you fill them with the sand? A tiny funnel would take an awfully long time!

best thing to put inside a tire is Rim Guard.. it weighs 11 pounds per gallon.. the unit in pics got that installed after pics were made.. so chains.. Rim Guard & 50 pound weights on it now..

Chains on soft dirt must be good,,, all the log skidders around here wear chains all the time,,,

For me, radial tires embarrass the heck out of bias ply tires.

When was the last time you saw a bias tire on a car or pickup?? :dunno:

The end of the third quarter of LAST century??

There is a reason for that,,, traction!! :fing32:

These tractors are behind the times,,, :hide:

The good thing about bias ply tires on a tractor is you will not snap your neck if you take off too fast,,
the tractor will just spin,,,:sidelaugh

What kind of tires?

Mud tends to plug several tread designs, with or without chains.
They are just stock lawn tractor tires.

Anyone ever try this style?

Turf tires are best for firm ground. Adding chains to them does not help much in mud conditions.

Ag tires work best in soft ground and mud conditions. That's why farmers have them on their field tractors.

Adding weight is almost universally good for improved traction.
