Hey guys,

So as per my post yesterday, the tiller I just picked up came with a supposedly good extra engine. I started to do an engine swap today, and noticed that the engnes were about 95% the same, but there was a difference that has me lost. Not sure of the proper terms here, but the whole assembly that has the throttle spring, arm and governor bar is mounted on the old engine to the block, on the new engine there is no where in same area to mount anything. Ideas? I'm sure there has to be a spot, isnt that how most throttles are run on small engines? Thanks a lot

What is wrong with the engine that is on the tiller? The red engine probably has an air vane governor. Take off the blower housing and there should be a plastic fin connected to the magneto. This was used on the really old Briggs, I have one with the same setup.

I should have specified, I just picked this stuff up yesterday, got home late, so today is the first day I have gotten a chance to dig into it. Only think I know about the current engine: guy said he never had it running, snapped spark plug, seized starter clutch (no recoil on pull start). Pulled the spark plug with relative ease, plug wasnt fouled at all. Have yet to check for compression or spark. Could be as easy as a starter clutch (luckily, even though my knowledge is limited, I went through that exact problem on a 70's Sears walk behind I picked up). So I'll probably get that engine on there, I already have it almost mounted, see how that runs while I trouble shoot the old engine.

On my Briggs there is a lever on the carb that you pull down and it increases the engines speed. More pics would be needed to see what yours is.

You can't operate a throttle on a tiller from the seat anyway unless you pull one to the dash or something. All you have to do is set the engine speed on the tiller and hop on and till. One of the scary things about the old attachments is they say to keep small pets away from them. You have to be able to reach the tiller from the seat to shut it down if a small animal tries to assault it while running.

On my tiller there is a throttle that is relatively easy to reach if you turn around when on the tractor. It is mounts to the two bolt holes on the head that holds down the blower housing.

SS Skippy: The old engine has the same type of throttle you describe, the first part bolts to the engine block for the throttle spring, whatever you call the body lever that the throttle cable attaches to and the governor with the cable going to a lever that is bolted onto the engine block that is easy to reach as described. My concern is the carburetors look the same, manual choke (up down lever no cable needed), and the throttle piece you would hook a cable into. That's what has me lost, if it is the same carb, how could it be a set throttle? Thanks for all the help will take more pics tomorrow

Hey Tim, I think the red motor has an air vane governor. While the black one is mechanical. Need more pictures and motor numbers too but what you have looks like it would work ok. Is the red one a 143302?
