Hello,
Im currently looking at a 1996 Murray GT that is also being sold along with a trailer. Model number: 46379X92A. 18.5 HP Briggs and Stratton motor, 46" cut.
From the pictures, it looks solid, the tires seem to hold air and have good tread. From what I have read on these forums, the Murray GTs seem to have a good reputation. Now for the bad: The owner claims it needs a pulley bearing due to him accidentally running over a wire with it(?). What are your thoughts on this mower? With it being on the older side, can I expect it to be reliable?
He is asking $500 with the trailer included, which seems high given what it needs and the time of year. Is this a fair price for such an old, but in seemingly good condition, Murray GT with a trailer? What should I ask for it?

In my opinion $500 would be a starting price if the machine was in good working order and was turn key. Mandrels are easy to change and run about $40 or so. I would offer $375 - $400 with the cart included and see what happens.

Thanks, I was thinking in the $350-400 range as well. But assuming it is in good condition, how much life would one think it has left in it?
I am also looking at a 1997 18 HP Kohler, 46" deck craftsman LT that has a little rust on the deck, but also a recent tuneup including all new belts, for $375. Assuming I could get the Murray GT for around the same price, which one would be expected to last?

Either machine is good, but the Murray is probably built a little heavier as it is a GT (trans, frame, etc.) Both machines are similar in age. When you factor in the cart, the Murray may be a better buy if you can get it for under $400. It looks like it was really well cared for. The only negative thing about these particular machines is the fragile plastic nose. Let us know what happens.
