Opened MTF today to discover that rustythings had sold his 110 RF. Kinda bummed me a little as I had planned on making the trek to Massachusetts after returning from vacation and purchasing his 110. But, as luck would have it, the whole family came down with a stomach bug and the vacation got extended a few days. That notwithstanding, it could have been weeks until I could have freed up some time to make the trip anyways so it was a bit of a long shot that someone wouldn't have scooped that great little tractor up before I could get there to buy it. Nevertheless, I'm glad that rustythings got his tractor sold and that another member gets to enjoy it. This is where the " things happen for a reason" comes in. I have been searching locally for many months for a decent RF tractor and came up empty every time. When I saw the post that this one had sold, it reminded me that I hadn't done a kijiji (Canadian version of craigs list) search in a few days. When I did, low and behold, there was a 64 110 RF, front and center less than an hour away from my work! Instantly called the guy and asked a few questions. All sounded good so I took the rest of the day off and headed down to see it. Now, the ad indicated that there had been a restoration done to it but as we all know, one mans idea of restored can be very different from another. The pics showed a decent shape 110 that someone had put a set of headlights on, sanded some rust off and sprayed some green paint on it. Turns put that's pretty much what I found. I must admit, it is in pretty good shape, everything seems to be there and it starts, runs and drives nicely. The mower deck works nicely as well. I paid the man his cash, loaded it into a U-haul and made tracks for home. Now it's sitting comfortably next to it's big buddy, the x748. Plans include disassembly, repair/replace whatever needs it, sand, prime and paint it. It won't be restored to pebble beach quality but it will be a nice clean example of a 110 RF and it will work properly and see plenty of working hours around the yard.
Sorry for the long winded post but I'm pretty excited to have finally found a decent example of what I consider to be the coolest looking little tractors that ever rolled off JD's assembly line. Here are a couple pics just after I pulled it into the garage.

Thanks everyone...I'm pretty happy with it. Needs a little work to get it where I want it to be but the process itself will be fun I think. What the cell phone camera pics don't show is that there's quite a few rust bubbles(no holes that I can see) and bad paint. I'll take all the cowling and whatnot off and see if I can smooth things out a little and shoot it with some primer and paint. Also looking to put on the original lights in the proper location (what exactly is the proper location, anyways?). next will be some bigger rubber on the back and ribbed tires on the front. May even keep my eyes out for a plow to scrape the driveway when the 748 and the blower are done their work. Lots of possibilities with this little guy.

You know, I think that actually looks pretty dang close to the proper location, from what I've seen of other people's RF 110s and 112s... I don't have headlights for any of mine :crybaby:

Great looking tractor and have fun with it. After doing the restore on my 64 RF I use it every week for 3 seasons of the year. I don't want to use it in the winter and get any salt on it. It's just fun to drive. I've had several people stop and look it over when I'm out using it as they drive by the house. slkpk

Most dealers mounted them to the hood as per the instructions Deere gave with the kit but some mounted them to the posts as I have on mine just a personal preference. The tail light on yours looks to be an original.

well that 110 looks in better shape than mine, and I am glad you found one close to home, I am still working a deal with the devil, plans have changed and we might still be selling my 110, to him only time will tell, I hope you post pictures as you go through to rebuild.

good luck mike:trink40:

Congrats on the 110 purchase. Something like that is probably pretty rare here in Atlantic Canada. Have fun with the restore and then future use. :fing32:

thanks! and yes, they seem to be pretty rare in these parts. I was honestly shocked when i saw it. Closest one I'd been able to find in Canada was in Sask. and the guy wanted $2000+ for it!

Canuckian, Nice little tractor. There is a set of original headlights with an original tail light and original switch for sale on the Weekend Freedom Machines site you might be interested in. The asking price is $300.00, not too bad considering it comes with the tail light, wiring and switch. The seller is in Arkansas, so not sure how much shipping might be to your door. If you were to work out a deal I would be interested in the tail light since my 64 RF is missing the tail light....just sayin LOL. Good luck,G man

Okay, I just saw this thread and want to say big congratulations! And I agree, these are cool little tractors and if you have half as much fun with yours as I do with mine, you are in for a lot of fun.:trink39:

I was able to get an original light kit for ours. I have yet to install them, but in my research I did locate the JD instructions which include a template to locate them properly:

Headlight/Tail-light Instructions with Template

This is what the light kit looks like:

Be sure to get the "correct" blade. You will want an original Model 42. There are ways to mount up a Model 43, but in my opinion it doesn't look quite right. You can see what I mean in this thread.

The good news, attachments for these tractors are still fairly plentiful, and usually at a reasonable price. For correct vintage, you'll want "Brass Tag" versions.

Have fun!!

P.S. What does that bumper sticker on the 110 say?
