The rear wheel fell off?!?

That was my wife's response to what happened...

Here's a picture of what I was facing...

As you can see, I leave the wheel weights on year round.

Behind the scenes, the lugnuts had loosened and fallen off. I guess that when the third of four fell off, the wheel fell sideways, but not before doing this...

Yes, that's a rip in the steel rim. As wimpy as those brakes are, the brackets cut through the rim.

So I gotta do something! This rim is torn and the four lug nut holes are oval shaped. The tires are 24*10.5-12, and in good shape.

A new wheel from cub is $115. Anyone got another suggestion? Can/should I just get the wheel welded?
Is a tube an option? (seems like a tube on a wheel with a hole like this isn't going last)

Any other ideas??

Going forward, I've figured out that, when I check the oil, I could look through the hole in the wheel weights to make sure the lug nuts are on.

Thanks...

Man is that a bummer! Easy to miss with the weights blocking view of the lugs. I'd consider a more common 23x10.5-12 as an option. It will only drop the back by 1/2". Check here: http://cgi.ebay.com/cub-cadet-1250-...66:2|39:1|72:1205|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:50

Seems like the same part number is used for the 3185 and 3208 (per partstree.com) and used for both the 23 and 24 inch tires! Options are good!

I tracked the 1450 shown in the ebay add and partstree cites a 8-1/2 JA-12 wheel.

Anyone know if these the are same with respect to offsets? There isn't a lot of room between the tires and the plastic gas tank and the tires and hydraulic levers.

I just junked a 2160 and have the wheels and transaxle in case you need could use either.. I'm in Avon and seem to remember your name.. Reply if you are interested.. Dave G.
You are comparing 4 lug to 5 lug wheels.

Scott
I cant believe you did not notice the wheel wobbling while you was driveing... You had to be watching the neighborers wife...

Ahh!! Good point. Indeed they are. As Kevin says.. I'll concentrate on the neighbor's wife instead.:bellyemot
I'd mig weld a patch on it and call it done,if it were mine..as long as the lug holes are not all "egged" out..

I got a brand new coleman 4 HP air compressor free because a guy at the parts store used it ONCE to fill a leaky tore on a forklift, and it fell off the back of it as he was driving back to the warehouse ,and the "foot" or stand welded to the tank tore out, ruining it--so they thought..they tossed it in the dumpster!..

I removed it from the dumpster as I was leaving that night, and took it home and MIG welded a patch on it, and then welded the "foot" back on--had it 6 years now,not a problem, and it holds 125 psi--your tractor tire needs what,20 psi maximum?..we welded patches on farm tractor rims that got rotted out by calcuim many times and never had any troubles..the pressure is so low its not really a concern, and your not going 70 mph on the interstate with it either..save your money and weld it is my answer..

Seeing you did say the lug holes got damaged,(didn't see that till I re-read the post!),then I might say replace it,because they could pull right through eventually..used ones are a lot less than new,and just as good ,IMO..
Dave (WNYTractorTinkerer), thanks for the kind offer...

Actually I did notice that the tractor wasn't tracking quite right about 100 feet earlier. As I've had problems with the steering arm loosening up causing tracking problems in the past, I just figured I'd have to tighten it again. Then I rounded the corner and "plop".

In all fairness, there was a problem with this wheel when I bought the tractor. There were only two lug nuts then and I replaced them, but the holes were worn. Now they are worn a bit more!

The 24x10.5-12 is an oddball, to be sure. When searching for, and buying lugs last year I did a lot of researching of tires. In the end I purchased a set of 23x10.5-12 that were the same overall height as my 24's.

This leads me to believe that the 24" figure is specmenship - pure marketing so Cub's 24's appear bigger then the competitions 23's. I just don't see the difference, except the marking on the tire.

BTW, the 23/24 is meaningless in your rim search. the 10.5-12, with a 5 lug pattern, is all you need to look for.

Gary,

My wheels are 4 lugs, but I appreciate the clarity on the rest of the information.

It's interesting about the 23/24 issue...

Fortunately the tire seems to be fine, so I only need the rim!

It sounds like the damaged lug holes (when you bought it) are source of all your problems. If it was just the tear, I would weld it. Since the lug holes are all messed up, I would definitely replace the wheel. Maybe you will have some luck finding a used one? :goodl:
Any chance this will fit???

Todd,

Thanks. The spacing/offset/setback doesn't even look close.
...

Thanks to everyone for the help.
I've called the dealer and it'll be here in 3 days.
Maybe someone can learn from my mistakes. Don't forget to check your lug-nuts!

Not going to "pimp my tractor" either!

However, at my wife's suggestion, we making a minor change to the appearance. You'll all just have to wait a few days until I get the wheel mounted, etc, to see what it will look like.
