As promised, some pics.

Still dressed in its work clothes.

The 12.5 briggs (fairly clean for a 95)

Missing the fender, but the previous owner might have it.

I will post some info in my next post. :trink39:

Looks like a great score for $20. I wish I could come across one for that. I could use the engine for another Murray I have. The 8hp Tec. engine I through in it last year is getting tired and smokes alot. Good luck with getting it going.

Yesterday we were having very high winds and a tornado warning so i didnt get alot done but heres the "low down" for now...

The owner said it was losing power and finally one day it would no longer start, with the breather off i cranked it & noticed it was pushing air back thru the carb. I pulled the head & it appears the intake valve is not seating & the intake port is crudded up. My valve spring compressor is still packed from when i moved so friday i will dig it out & continue. Other than that the engine is pretty clean inside with very little carbon & the cyl looks to be in good shape also.

The steering is nice & tight and the deck is pretty clean with tight spindles, but whats scaring me is the trans. The spring for the shifter is missing & the shifter is extremly tight & its to the point of flexing before it actually moves. I fear it might be something internal in the trans.

I have friday off so i will be updating then. any questions or comments are welcome. :trink39:

BTW if he doesnt have the fender, would any of you have one for sale?

I just junked out one like that this past March. Kept the engine, tranny, front axle, etc, but tossed all of the body parts. If I still had that stuff, I'd send you a fender.

Just a quick update for you all. It's alive! :trink39: I ended up having to grind down the intake valve to proper clearance & cleaned the ports/head etc.. i then tried starting it & found it had no spark. On the last try, the previous owner ended up grounding the pos battery terminal against the body so that may be what fried the coil. I "modified" a 3.5 coil and the motor roared to life and sounded pretty good but extremly loud as the muffler was shot as well... Another co worker gave me a good muffler & with it bolted on the motor sounds perfect without any knocks or smoke. :fing32:

The best part about this is my son got home early & was able to get out and help me out. heres a pic of us, bolting it back together.

Stay tuned for the next chapter, wiring 101.

The grin on your son's face is worth much more than the $20 you spent on the tractor. Tell him to keep up the good work.
Thanks! :trink39: he is an exellent helper and a really great kid. he has helped me with alot of push mowers & can pretty much put the top end of a 3.5 briggs back together by himself, not to shabby for 7 yrs old!

he will be 8 at the end of this month & he kept giving me "hints" that he really wants to try driving a mower, so i told him once this one is running right he gets to drive it. he is super pumped about this. :thThumbsU
