Terramite T5, are they really that bad?

I am in the market for a used sub 4000 lb loader/backhoe. I have a lot of grading and trenching to do, good deal of earth moving. I understand there are much bigger and better units for these jobs, ie a skid loader and a mini ex. But, I have a limited budget and will have lots of free time to use the thing.
So, in the range of $7500, can anything touch a Terramite T5? I read some very good opinions about them, then others bash them left and right. There seems to be little middle ground, people either swear by them or despise them.
Complaints seem to be speed having only 1 range hydro, not being refined enough, and inability to climb hills with a load... The speed may get old but I can live with it. Not being refined doesnt bother me, I'm not looking at using it all day everyday. The not being able to climb a grade with a load concerns me. Anyone have any insight into this? It doesnt need to power up a steep steep hill, but I need it to be able to at least make it up the same hills my 2 wheel drive garden tractors can.
The other machines I have considered are the Ingersoll small LBH (6018, 7020) an the Kubota B20/21. The Bota's never seem to be under 10K, and the Ingersolls are nearly impossible to find, and even smaller than the Terramites.
So, let's hear about these Mites, good and bad.

I had two of them when I had my rental business, I would recommend it. If you take care of it, you'll also realize excellent resale value.
The people that talk trash about them are ones that either A: don't know how to run a machine or B: have never run one, or even seen one for that matter. I have had mine for 4 or 5 years now, it is an older one, runs and works like it is new, but doesn't look like it. My machine was the founding machine for a now successful excavating business, the owner had it stored because it was so good to him that he didn't want to get rid of it.

The tractor has no problem climbing grades fully loaded and I live on the side of a mountain. I have pulled my 1 ton dump, with car trailer attached and a car on it up the ice covered driveway and to the road, the machine constantly amazes me. They ARE slow! but that is about the only bad thing I can say.

If you are close enough to me, come run it and try it out.

Thanks for the opinions gentlemen. Really nice to see some good opinions from people who have actually used them. It seems a lot of these guys want a machine that is refined and has all kinds of gadgets. I'm the opposite, dont mind using something simple and less refined and like the fact that thy seem easy to repair with common parts. I'm not looking for something shiny to impress my neighbors, just want something that can do legitamit digging and earth moving within reason. It is a shame they never offered a 2 range hydro trans for higher speeds.
eddyyy302, what engine does your machine have? Very glad to see you say it will climb a grade easily, that always baffled me. I have a feeling guys "floor" the pedal where it makes the least torque possible. I have a line on one with a 20hp Honda, looks to be in good shape and the guy is asking $7200. I haven't been able to find many other ones for less than $8000. And thanks for the test drive offer, I will hopefully find a rental house nearby that has one and see if they will let me try it out.

My machine has the 18hp Kohler L head, I have a spare 20hp Kohler v-twin OHV sitting on the shelf should the original engine ever blow. These 2 engines are the 2 that are listed in the terramite manuals for my machine.

my bro has had for years he.s dug up some good sized trees with it done some trenching spread gravel it has a 20 hp kohler single cyl i think as was said before knowing how to operate is the key
I have a T5c and I love it. It has the 20 HP honda engine with power steering and a locking differential. It runs great whenever I need it no mater what the weather. I used to borrow my neighbor's T5C until the local auction place had one on their lot. I offer the guy 7,000 cash and he took it.
I like the T5C because it was MADE to be a back hoe/loader. It's not a CUT with an add on loader and backhoe. It is heavy duty for a small machine yet light enough so that it does not tear up soft grass or make ruts in the spring. I have no trouble climbing hills with a bucket full of rocks or clay. Sometimes I need to extend the hoe out for a little extra traction or even grab a good size boulder when I need to keep the hoe in close for tight spots. But it climbs!! I have no trouble diging 4 foot deep water lines through hard pan or dried clay. It will even chew through shale with a little patience. It digs out stumps that the machine can't even pick up! I just roll them to the burn pile. I welded three snag hooks on the front bucket and I have a dozen or so plastic 55 gallon drums. I use a ten foot piece of chain to load and hold the barrels that are filled with mulch, compost, dirt, gravel, water etc. while I move them around my property. I can hold two of thee barrels at a time on the bucket. The chain comes in handy to lift and move huge rocks that won't fit into the bucket. I used my machine to put in the water, drain, sewer, and electric lines around my house. I also used it to back fill and final grade the area around my house that has a full basement. I use the machine to grade the driveway after heavy rains. I use it to build my ride on size model railroad. I use it in conjunction with my side tip trailer to rebuild pond banks. And the list goes on and on. The machine is simple to drive so that if needed, even my wife can handle it Nothing but good things.

It will dig circles around JD's and Kuby's of the same size.

Not a great pic but it's the only one I have right now

Hi,
I have a 1991 Terramite T5c tractor loader and need some parts. I amin need of a steering shaft and or the dogbone or steering arm. It's a manual steering box etc. Please let me know if you know where to find it. Any contacts would be appreciated. The company no longer makes it etc.

Thanks,
Bob
I ran a diesel tractor that was really slow compared to other same tractors. I removed the double fuel filters and they were half full of ice, yet the tractor still ran. You may want to look into the fuel filter
