John Deere 425, 1996 model I think. Temp gauge keeps fluctuating from low to high.

Could it be a water pump or just a temp gauge?

Thanks for any input

I'm thinking possibly an occasionally sticking thermostat or an air pocket somewhere in the cooling system.

If you aren't working the engine much, that's pretty normal (to go from cold to middle). You are basically seeing the opening and closing of the thermostat. When the thermostat opens, the temp drops quickly, when it closes the temp rises again. I've seen it a lot when folks run snowblowers as the engine just never makes any heat. The 425/445 gass engines use the same radiator as the diesel 455, so it cools things down quickly.

I'll bet that when you are mowing tall grass it stabilizes. If so, don't worry about it...it's the above scenario. Won't hurt anything.
