I have an 1811 cub with an 18hp Kohler Magnum that is just about shot.

A coworker has a mid 80's cub w/ 14 hp onan and a bad trans. As far as I understand the trans on the 14hp is some sort of clutch /belt arrangement w a pedal. He is willing to give it away, but is not able to provide any more info such as year or model #.

Any chance that the onan would bolt up to the 1811 without too much difficulty?

Thanks

if you do replace the motor don't trash the old m18. Most rebuilders are looking for good rebuildable cores. Most die after dropping the gov and aren't much good for rebuild. That's what I was told by the guy who rebuilt mine anyway. I could probably find his # if you are interested in having yours redone. Ain't ceap but mine runs like a top.

Well I picked up the mower, it is a 2140 w/ a 14 hp. Runs like a top but the trans doesn't seem to work real well, apparently the clutches are slipping and there is an adjustment as to how much power is applied to forward or reverse. The guy who gave it to me said he adjusted so that it favored forward. Which it definitely does any incline and it will not back up.

As for the swap it really doesn't look practical. And, As far as the magnum goes the previous owner slapped a big gob a jb weld on the case along side one of the cylinder heads (the side w/ the oil lines). See pic.
Is this where the governor problem occurs?

Also if the dipstick is loose, not pressed down tight, oil gurgles & shoots out of the tube, is this normal?

The engine currently is running ok but I don't have any hopes of it lasting very long.
