The engine turns over, the blade has been disengaged. (the knob is down) There is gas in the tank. The engine makes a grinding kind of noise and turns over till I turn the key back to the off position. What do I do next?

Drat - I was hoping for a starter relay...

Could be a few things - did anything unusual happen before it started acting up?

For example - if it ran out of gas the fuel filter may be clogged. Changed battery or other service under the hood could lead other places. Is the battery fully charged?

Based on your "grinding" description the starter motor may have bought it and is not fully engaged with the flywheel. Can you see if the engine spins over when you turn the key? I don't recall where the flywheel is on STX.

Ignition switch ?? They go bad especially if they get wet a lot ( stored out side washing etc.)
It has run out of gas several times this summer, I have also turned off the engine prior to it throttling down properly, a big bang announced my mistake! I drove it into the garage after mowing the last time so it was working. The battery is running low at the moment but I thought that that was because I tried to start it so often. The engine does spin when I try to start it.

Could the "grinding" you heard be the clicking of a low battery? You may want to throw it on a charger and see what happens once it is fully charged.
