Stupid tree limb

3928 Views 30 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  aboutime
I was cutting neighbor's front yard, came around corner by my yard and caught a low hanging limb on my peach tree with front tire. I was going fast enough that before I knew it, the tire had pulled limb down and a larger cut off part went right into my upper grill. :banghead3:banghead3:reallymad
I had repaired once with some metal brackets underneath. My neighbor bondo'd, sanded and primered for me, but I undid all that with one shot.
By the time I stopped and got off, hood was all jacked, hanging off and this is what I end up with.....

:crybaby: :thSick:

I plan on do some type of repairs since it's my worker tractor, maybe alot of fiberglass/bondo. I replaced with nose from my ST16 restore tractor for now, hope I don't mess that one up too.

That's a bummer Tahoe, usually in my case the branch ends up hitting me in the head or face! Well that's better than knocking the tractor, I'll heal, tractors need to be fixed!! LOL

The grill on my ST has undergone some reconstructive surgery by the P O, I'm sure from use I'll end up damaging it again

yikes! at least you didn't land in the ER:)
I wish it would have been the tractor.

Repaired for a relative and went for a test run. Sure it will go between the fence and that magnolia tree because those little new growth limbs will bend. Hidden just behind the tree growth was a inch diameter dead stiff limb, that had been pruned, that hooked with authority in my old rib cage. *** near pulled me off backwards while trying to rip my guts out my side. That's terrible to treat a guest that way, especially when he repaired the tractor for free.
Hey TAHOE99, I have one of those stupid trees in my yard also bent the hood and broke the base off my S12 last fall like you I was not happy. Good luck getting it repaired.
Yea, thankfully limb was in front. Didn't realize I wa going that fast until hood got jacked and twisted sideways. Didn't have to get off tractor to know I did serious damage.
SC, I know what ya mean. Been cutting my neighbor's yard all summer, he's got one fruit tree with a low lying limb I hit with my head every stinkin' time, seeing stars type hit. Bad part is I know it's there and still catch it.

Sure wished Sears had made upper cast like the lower, but I guess it was cost savings!
Ouhee Whaa Whaa!

Maybe it is time to switch to a SS12 grill. It would be nice if a sheet metal person could bend up a sheet metal version of the fiberglass nose cones.

OR better yet someone make some type of form of original grill and reproduce them in new fiberglass or cast aluminum would be sweet.
I have three of them like that. Planning on figuring out a good way to fix them one of these days.
I'm sorry that happened to your nose/grill piece. It's always frustrating when damage happens to our tractors.

I still need to repair the grill on my SS/18. But however I repair it, I think I'm also going to look into creating a heavy brush guard that I can bolt on somehow to protect the nose in the future. Roper built a good machine, but this grill design in plastic was just plain stupid.

I think they should be made available again, made with steel or aluminum and not of plastic. Anyone know what happened to Roper and all their manufacturing stuff when they got bought out? Was it AYP who bought them? Maybe the nose pattern still exists and could be had for a price. If they could be made with metal, I bet lots of guys (and gals) would buy them.

Just dreaming out loud again... :dunno:
sorry bout your tractor tahoe anylimbs I can,t ride under gets sawed off
If those tubes are hollow inside, I might see if its possible to get some rigid foam cut / shaped to fit inside, then fiberglass around the outside where the break is. Find some glue that won't eat the foam, and you'll have a super-strong joint on the bottom piece that will keep it together. It stinks that you have to repair it, but I think its totally repairable.
I will make some type of steel plate that will go under probably the upper lip this time, last time was the lower one. I plan to make it go across the entire front lip trying to include some angle to form new holes for the hinge bolts since those get all worn out and sloppy too. I did have some angles I made last time, but I guess they weren't long enough and I just spot welded them which also broke so I did a poor job. Once I can get plate made, then plenty of fiberglass and mesh along with some Bondo top coat and it should look fine. I can save it, just have to take my time this time around and do it right.

You can kind of see the metal brackets in this pics I made before, too short to support enough obviously. Would help if I would hit stuff. Too bad I can't have my winch mount on while mower mule drive is in, it protects hood pretty well.

I'd use a steel u shaped peice under the fiberglass to reinforce it better...I had some pallet racking shelf supports that would be about the right size and shape to fit under that peice that would be good to use, high tensile strength..

If there is one "weakness" in our old Roper built tractors, its the grille, dash and sheet metal, but at least they are rugged where they needed to be,and left the "cosmetics" the weakest parts!..

DITTO on that!
i repair mine with fiberglass and bondo and if you get fiberglass filler you can really get into it. the more the better
This is when I most appreciate the cast iron grill of the older IH Cubs. It's simply a non-issue. Hope you get her fixed up, and glad you didn't get whacked!

Member Elswood Vintage L&G plans to make molds for these nose cones one day. He'll make them out of steel or aluminum.

I'd buy one, I wonder if he's planning to do this soon, or just "some day"?

I thought I read that, now I remember it was him. He is trying to sell off a lot of his parts to afford some type of casting equipment to make parts from.

I would cut off limb, but it's about only limb left on peach tree, it was planted when my son was 1 yr old so kind of his tree.....waiting for him to give me permission to cut it down or it finally dies :thThumbsU
