Stuck Tractor Please HELP

Hi, My big mo 500 is stranded in New york right now due to a frozen/stuck brake. Iam not sure if the parking brake is stuck or what. Any help getting it to roll would be appreciated. they had a 4x4 tractor spinning all four tires with the winch from the trailer pulling it. I have a big mo 500. Iam wondering if they didnt relize the parking brake was on. The guy said it had been moved less than a year ago.He said the brake pedals were both up. The previous owner of the tractor was not there, Iam wondering if they missed the hand brake lever. Alot of wasted time and money today. Hope it goes smother next time...

Send a msg to Bear; he is the MM man here.
Shawn,

Where exactly is it stuck?? I mean location in New York? You might be close to one of our NY members and not know it.

I'm sure many of us could give you our best guess, but that may be little help unless there is a Tractor Guy' right on site. Someone who may be able to pull springs under brake covers and loosen shoes for example....or pop loose a differential lock that might have been stuck.

Some times it's just dumb things like when I looped a buddies winch cable (accidently Keith) around the lower brake arms, and that tractor would not budge. Hopefully others may have better suggestions then mine - either way good luck!

I forgot to mention another possibility...Stuck flywheel to clutch disk. Happens often to tractors that sit for extended periods...it may even shift or pedal operate off of it's own spring but the disk is frozen solid to the flywheel.
When I tryed moving mine it was not brakes it was locked gears..I removed shifter plate inspection cover and shimed gears to unlock trans...this was a JD 40..are you sure its the brakes..it had been 30 yrs..on mine..B,
The guy said it had been moved less than a year ago.

I've had snowplow trucks with stuck brakes after sitting for a week.
Are you sure it"s the brakes. maybe water in the trans or rearend frozen?

Exactly::: you would be suprized..how much frozen water can do ..just dripping in around shifter boot...B,
Had the frozen rear problem as well, at least twice, not counting the ice fishing excursions.
I was wondering if heating some areas with a tourch would free , or melt ice. Iam not even sure they identified where the parking brake was, I looked in my manual, and it apperas its a hand lever. I have been waiting to get this thing for a few months and just another bump in the road. But if there is any tractor guys in the Marlboro, New York Area, I could throw ya a few bucks for lookin at it. Thanks Shawn

Never heard of Marlboro, New York , Whats it near?
Marlboro, NY is near the Conn. line. About the same latitude as Waterbury Conn. Bring your tools and be punctual..hahha, but seriously thanks for the responcese.

Yes Glen, I finaly foung a great guy to transport it and bingo, The Tractor didnt want to come to his new home. I dont think he realizes how well I will treat him. He is like a stubborn Mule. Now Iam determined more than ever to get this rusted iron up and running. Either the ground is to soft or the tractor is frozen, I cant win...

Shawn! If the trans. is in neutral it wouldn't matter if clutch was stuck to flywheel!!! sounds more like water frozen in the trans. or rear-end!-----heat under the belly would get it moving, but it may take a big torch,--might be only way to get it!
First thing might be to take brake covers off and see if they stuck when he moved it last time!---that move may have been just enough to stick them now.
This is a really remote possibility, but do you know what kind of rear-end/final drive oil it has in it?-----We had a pair of H tractors that had a coal black oil in them that would freeze at 32 degrees, just like water!----Like I said REMOTE,---but possible!
I know you want it home and wish I could go get it for you but I'm in the middle of Il.
This would be my first checks on it to see why it won't roll! thanks; sonny

sorry been busy and haven't made it on here for a couple days not sure what style brakes the big mo has but i have solved stuck brake problems by pulling the brake assembly out. ice in the rearend was mentioned and is very possible this time of year pull the drain plug for the diff and see if there is ice right there as waster should be at the bottom
if tehre is ice in it tarp the tractor to keep heat in and use a kerosene heater or torch to warm the rear end this will take some time. leave the plug out so the water can drain out as it melts. hope this helps

Heres an Update guys, as I had mentioned in another thread, but figured you guys might be tuned in here.I got the big mo transported today. Unfortunatly the very last turn was to great for the hauler. I did tell him all about the curve and we walked it together before he tried anything. It was an icy steep turn. The hauler Had a freightliner, with 38ft. trailer. He figured it was a possibility to drive past the turn and back up around the corner and down to my property (about 400 yards). I watch in dought as his effort failed. He had good spirits though. Now what? its getting darker..colder aready about 5 degrees and windy. After we realized we wert going to pull this off this time we weighed our options. There was an apple orchard in view. The trucker recomended, lets see if you can store it there until you can drag it to you property. I agreed. I drove down as the trucker went do the steepest, ices hill I could ever dream of.The trucker and I had only met for a few minutes but already we were working together like brothers. I drove (turned around) over to the apple orchard .I bannged on a door with people on the other side I had never met before. I had seen the man before as I drove by,and a wave once in a while. I told him of our delema. He came running out of his house in a tee shirt (remeber 5 degrees out) and started looking at his 100 + acer lot. Over in a snow cover clearing he said you can put it over there anywhere near my 2 tractors. I was grateful and thanked him. What a good guy the apple orchard owner is. What would you say If you looked out and seen me with a 40ft. trailer and a rusty moline. When I told him my tractor wasnt to pretty he laughed and pointed to his Old Case (I think it was a Case) and said do I seem worried about looks ! The Trucker sized up ther area and realized this was no longer an option. Low wires going to his barn and slippery hills wernt going to work. Ok, Now what? I have an Idea, there is a guy named Fulton down the road about a mile. He has some new CATs and all kinds of Equipment. I drive down there and called the phone # off his sign. They awnser, Next thing you know Fulton fires up a Cat and Yanks it off the trailer. We all Have a few laughs, Fulton senior and son are looking at the old Moline Laughin, like what the **** is this thing. The old timer tells me " I was there once"... then we planned the final delivery. He is even going to Clear a spot to work on it. Iam sure it gonna cost alittle but in that situation, what were my options.. sorry for the long post, just wanted to tell the whole story.

Thats the stuff that adds to the fun of this hobby!!! When that thing is all up and runing, you got a great story!!!!
I would bet that the problem is ice in the tranny and or the rear end. When I worked for the IH dealership we would have at least one tractor a year that would have enough water in it that the first good cold snap all of a sudden wouldn't move. Good luck getting your project home and getting it up and running again. :fing32:
