I bought this older Steiner. My plan is to fix it up, give it a paint job then work it. The p.o had said it leaks real bad oil and smokes bad and he only used it to tow cars up his steep incline driveway, He had said the tractor was never under any cover for its hole life just sat in the open. But had said the guy he got it off put a new engine it?
I had bought the tractor it had such a bad oil leak the hole tractor was coated, and had its own smoke cloud that would follow you around.

I had give it about 3 different engine degreaser baths to see where the leak was coming from but it still would hardly clean up. But it was better than it was. I had put on my spare mower deck that i have for my newer Steiner and i mowed with it.

Seems the oil leak was the crank seal, I pulled the motor gave it some more engine degreaser baths. After the motor is simi clean I can see all newer gaskets hiding under the covers/ Pull the covers and see written in crayon (REBUILT IN 2001) Turns out the had put a wrong crank seal in it when they rebuilt the motor. fixed that, no more oil leak.
Now i started to give it a paint job, Painting it with Valspar IH red, from TSC. I only painted the hood so far and the wheels.

I building a snow blade for it to, i am using a rusted up cub cadet blade. going to cut the wear edge off of it. then weld a newer but longer edge on it then I'm going to put aluminium over the blade part and bolt the two together so i have a smooth blade part.

New fast hitch built for the blade

Interesting post, looking forward to your results and if you get the purchase made.

We have a Ventrac in grounds department, state university. It comes out when the real work starts.

I did get gas flowing but the tank contaminated it. I pumped it out with my hand pump. So her jug is filled up with bad gas. I had emptied my gas jug into the tank(On the first day) so I was out. (I use diesel for my tractor). So I did my own yard work yesterday including pulling my FEL and BH and mowing for 3 hours including her yard. (Retired so I golf every morning with my older brother...Yeah what a life:cool:)

I looked up Poly fuel tanks and they run $35 to $50 which is what I'll recommend to her and I took my battery back to my WH tractor. So another $75 or so since her Steiner takes a car battery. She is a recluse and didn't answer the door when I knocked so I couldn't tell her where we were at. I am generous with time and money but I'll have her buy this stuff from up the street as she has some issues.

Else I will recommend she get them (JD dealer a mile away) to go over it for a $1000 they will fix her up and it will be worth it. I would have given here a $1000 originally without looking at it...but now that I have examined it I wouldn't pay for it. It needs 4 new tires, a complete sandblasting and painting. I know the fuel tank can be cleaned out and coated, but its a pain when not removable as this one is(and way beyond what I can do for free). Also the engine while seemingly low hours is underpowered at 18HP....I would look at replacing it.

Oh and the other reason I stopped...That clean out (PB Blasted for 2 days and I can't use heat near the fuel) and fuel line on the petcock will not come off so I have to let her know that if I continue I am serious risk of breaking parts. I need to get a fuel line repair parts the stubs to to repair it. I have to cut the fuel line to replace the petcock. If I pull any harder on it , it will break. Doesn't even have a clamp on it...Its is fuel line that lasts forever but is rigid.

I think this would be a good project for someone who needed a 4x4 tractor...I already have one so I'll be passing unless she offers it up. I will remind her again that I'll mow and plow for free. :coffee::)

Hope to have a better update next week and pics or vids of it running. It's like a dog with a bone...I would rather do something else with my time but can't drop it.

What kind of effort would it take to get it out of where she has it stored so you can work on it easier?

Yeah that is the problem,,,It has to be trailered out. It is a 2 person job so I would have to get a friend involved. It is roughly 500' curved and steep down her drive.... across a cul de sac...going up my drive even steeper but uphill so no problem. It's the downhill that will require the trailer. It has no brake left. Not a problem if it was running. I also do not want to chance breaking the trans axles. According to the manual you can roll it in neutral...but I still would rather not. If I have to get a friend over, we can just trailer it. The drive makes backing a trailer up there difficult for even a couple old truckers like us.

So yes I thought about for a minute. Right now I drive over with all my tools and compressor and misc. in my FEL. It is just an awkward situation...I thought it would be an hour to get it running...drive it over change oil and figure out controls...Take it back...No I am on 5 hours or so....

Now that I have an idea of how much it needs, I need to cut it loose...I say that after every time I work on it...but I keep going back 'cause none of us like to be stumped. One more try with fresh gas straight out of my gas can. It will be above the carb so it will flow. If it starts out...Yeah I'll be inclined to continue...If not I give up...at least for that day. LOL

Oh, I should mention I pay $26 an hour for a nurses aid daily for 6 hours to help my disabled wife get to the bathroom, eat and do her rehab...So it is costing me money to be doing this...which I have not mentioned to the woman...Tho she does know we have an aid. The other 18 hours a day I take care of her.

This is the biggest reason I want to be done with this.

chex313,

Very understandable in your situation.

Every minute spent on the Stiener needs to be productive with results or I'm sure you feel like you are spinning your wheels. If you had it at your house, would you be able to work on it and care for your wife?

Take care,

Yes for sure, Once I know it runs , I'll drop the front mower and drive it over. I have Echo's and Dots's and Google devices. The whole house has the built in Alexa intercom. All the lights work thru voice. So Linda can turn on the driveway lights when I am mowing...I was plowing this neighbors drive and can barely see our drive and she became upset that I took to long to come help her last winter...So yeah I can work around the house and in the garage.

chex313,

Appears as though you have a well devised communication system in place.
