I have been thinking about machining front tires from 1/2 in thick round steel. I want to make the tire out of the 14 In diameter round steel and cut a hole in it and use it as a tire for the winter so i can steer good. Do you guys think it will work?

I understand what you are trying to do, but you might be better off running one chain down the middle of your rubber tires. I think someone on here tried that last winter. Something along the lines of deflating the tire, installing the chain tightly, then fill the tire up so the sidewalls keep the chain in the middle of the tread

I thought about making some skinny steel wheels for the front of my Suburban and using them to run over the thousands of small diameter branches that have fallen in the pine grove behind our house..the tractor as it is snaps many of them when you run them over, but with skinny steel "tires" like disc harrows would really bust those branches into stove length wood FAST!...

I am going to put a single row of roller chain on my front tires this winter to aid steering with the plow and snowblower,my tractor likes to go straight ahead ONLY when any ice or snow is on the driveway!...put a nice dent in my van when it failed to steer away from it in time ..might add a weight up front too.

There is an amish mennonite community, the next town over from me and I was talking to one of the farmers lately and he said there leadership is slowly changing a few rules:
- while using steel wheels for over a century, rubber wheels apparently have been just recently approved (higher up) / apparently the reason is that the new style wheels will be easier on the horses when pulling
- they still don't have hydro (use diesel generators) and when they need to use a phone / just a buggy ride to the nearby public school to place a phone call
- they are really nice people and still believe in an honest hand shake
