I've been looking to pick up a broadcast spreader to pull behind the tractor. Found an ad for one locally that is a JD broadcast spreader, but the hopper itself looks to be stainless steel. The frame, etc, are green painted metal. I can't find anything on google about JD spreaders that had SS hoppers (i.e. were they old, cheap, premium, etc etc). No info on a model or weight capacity, etc. It does have pnuematic tires.

Anyone know anything about this type of spreader and if it is any good?

JD offered some up to maybe 10 years ago. Very nice spreaders and not cheap. I remember them being kind of small, boxy, and @ $250 new. Don't remember the model number though.

One like you describe listed on the Portland Oregon craigslist:
http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/grd/3818423368.html

Looks like it would hold a 50# bag of 16/16/16 easy enough. Wheels on this one look like cheap plastic. Bushings on the axle, and no idea about whats inside the gear box, but given its just a plastic container, I'm guessing not some lubricated, metal gear box.

I have no personal experience with this particular unit, but last weekend with the hand crank spreader has me looking.
