Can the battery still charge if the ammeter does not work?The needle does not move either way.

It depends upon what's wrong with it, but most of the time the answer is no, your battery is not going to charge. An open meter will disconnect the battery from the charging system.

Most amp meter failures are with the small needle / magnet, The < 1 ohm shunt rately fails.

Ok, I'll buy that. Either way it depends upon exactly what is wrong with the meter and whether the shunt opened or not.

Do you have a meter to test whether the battery is charging or not? Of course at some point it is going to be fairly obvious if it isn't...

Just check to see if you have continuity across the old meter with an Ohm meter, Should show close to "0" Ohms
