OK, maybe not a must look but I got your attention. Tomorrow I will be getting my rims/tires back along with a nice little gift which means I can get the SS out of it's corner in the shed so I can work on it. Other than it's massive oil leak it needs help with the s/g. I was wondering if any one knows how I can test the voltage regulator with a multi meter? Also if any one has a wiring diagram for the 1970 SS12's it would be greatly appreciated.

Advice on working with the S/G's on these would also be very greatly appreciated.

:thanku::thanku::thanku::thanku::fing32:

I will of course share what my little gift is when I get it, but I'm almost cruisin for a bruisin with it. I will also be sharing my paint work.

I am working on my S/G right now as well! I think I smoked my ignition switch though... Smoke came from somewhere under the dash.

Take readings at the battery posts,while running @ about 1/2 to wide open,should be 14.7 or so.If it's 12volts,your only seeing the battery and generator is not putting out.That's how I do it,there's probley another way though.

Dude11, I did that right away when I bought the tractor and now I'm trying to figure out what's causing it to not charge. I should have said that in my original post.

I have looked at the wiring and it looks OK, I'm going to be more thorough today if I get my tires. My biggest concern is the voltage regulator since those cost so much.

Well, I got the tires back, and the little gifts that took 2 1/2 hours to mount and stop the leaks. I'm very thankful for my co-worker giving me them, saved me a lot of money and I don't have to worry about the side wall failing on one any more.

But I'm still wondering if any one knows how to test the voltage regulator to see if it's working or not.

I'm off to bed, got a long warm day tomorrow that will be very busy from what I am told.

try full fielding the gen.
Full fielding the gen? I'm not too bright on electrical stuff. However I hope to get to get working on it this evening after work.

Usually if a generator works as a motor when connected to a battery properly to "motorize" it,it will also charge,since the windings and armature all need to be working properly to do either function--so if your starter/generator cranks the engine ok, chances are good its fine,and the charging problem lies in the wiring or regulator...cjeck all grounds and wires and the ignition switch before condemming the voltage regulator...

took the S/G out, all wires seem to be making contact but it started getting dark and I noticed oil in another spot. Any way I ended up taking the head off and found it soaked with oil, also checked the breather and it's fine. I think one of the rings could have broke. Any ideas?

Another note is there isn't any oil sitting on the piston which I was told could be a symptom of a broken ring.
