Well while mowing the lawn today the tractor died. Open the hood to take a look and the spark plug blew out of the head. Can i helicoil it? Do I have to take the head off to do it? What size am I looking for

contact one of your local auto parts store to see if they sell helicoil , then just take your old plug in to get it matched up

Yep, you sure can. And yep, best to take the head off.

I got this one kit with the Tap and various length coils from Autozone. Peened it in too, from the underside.

Peened pic, just seemed a little loose, as someone else was in this engine before me. This coil was a little long, so it was ground back to the head face.

there are good usable heads on EBay for $30.00. You should remove the head to do a coil so why not just get another head and do it right.

Just to be clear, the one I use is not exactly a helicoil, which is kinda like asking for " Kleenex" which is a brand of tissue, not the product.

" Helicoil" is kinda like the same thing, there are several types.Most are a coil of wire that just goes down into the threads.

The one I used is more like a time-sert, which is a full threaded sleeve, complete with a flanged top to receive the spark plug compression washer . While not exactly ideal , they sure do work well, especially if you want an engine running, and cannot source a replacement head.
