So am i screwed?

I was trying to remove one of my rear axle hubs on my 8199 today to replace the hub because it is worn out at the keyway and it was coming off but it was sticking on the axle a little so i was wiggling it and tapping the back side with a hammer to get the hub off. It was comjng off and was almost off when the axle slid out several inches. Have i broken some kind of a clip inside the trans or something? Looking back i should have used a puller. Any help appreciated.

Sorry, yes, that's a problem.

The axles are held in by snap rings around the axle ends, inside the differential. You've undoubtedly popped off the snap ring. There's no way to repair it without a transmission teardown.

Ask me how I know :hide:
Has anyone made a decent tear down totorial ? Pictures please

Thanks for the quick response i was thinking that was the case. Glad to hear someone else has done it that makes me feel a little better but i should have known better a puller was the proper tool i was just using a hammer because it was closest and did not feel like i was tapping it that hard but now i know for next time. Ill have to give it a good look over while im in there and depending on condition possibly replace the pto clutch other then a good visual and obviously a new axle clip anything else i ahould be looking at closley or replacing while im in there? Any advice appreciated.

Don't feel bad. Our own arcam8123 (IIRC) has a set of videos of using a puller and breaking the snap ring anyway:

I see... in his video my guess would be that the clip broke because he had built all that pressure and when the hub finally broke free it slammed into the nut or whatever he had stuck to the end of the alxe and worked like a slide hammer pulling the axle out. But again glad to hear im not alone.
LOL! Yep, that's me. The first vid is me removing the broken hub (the PO used an air wrench to tighten the nut). I didn't know how much force it would take and I didn't want the puller flying across the shop, so just started the hub nut on the axle to prevent the hub and puller from launching! Unfortunately, the result was when the hub released, the inertia of the hub/puller hit the nut and put enough force on the internal snap ring to pop it out of the groove.

In the second vid, I'm about to declare victory when I notice the axle sliding out too far. I calmly walk over and shut off the camera. The viral vid would have been the one me after the camera went off. I lost it, screamed every curs work know to man and made up a few new ones. If I have left the nut off, it probably would not have broken.

Before you open the trans, buy two gaskets. Just incase you don't get it back together right the first time.

Lol yea me too i made some new noises/words that arent technically swear words but by the tone and anger anyone would have known what they ment. Has anyone done a good tear down and repair thred on thease trans it seems like they need to be tore down by a lot of people but i cant find any videos or step by step pics on how its done just pictures of the trans dissassembled and that does no good it just scares me lol.

Im willing to dig in and tear it down but if anyone out there would be willing to even write down a step by step so i know im doing it correctly that would be great.

Exactly!

Look at the newer manuals for the part on disassembly for a PTO replacement. The good news is you don't have to pull near as many of the shafts out to get to the differential.

All of the manuals im seeing only have an illistrated parts list no dissassembly info.

Anyone who can point me in the direction of a teardown manual or thred? Ill be your best friend
I've done it also Michael. In my case it is still in that condition. That 812 became a donor for me saving me about double what I paid for it so far.

Look for threads that talk about PTO clutch replacement. There are a couple that are picture rich and will get you all you need to know.

With your skill set this will likely not be a big deal except for the time. It has been suggested, making up some long bolt substitutes for removal and re-installment of the cover, can help avoid things moving and dropping - things you don't want to drop and/or move.

My good pal Devans made a set up for me to use if I ever stop chickening out and open that trans. I will:fing32: Here they are in my special tools drawer, just to the left of the multi-meter.

The assembly bolts sound like a good idea i will definitely do that.

I'll second those bolts, that cover is heavy!

I use them for disassembly and reassembly. You want to pull that cover straight off to minimize how many of those shafts that "stick" to it and follow it off.

I've been into my trans several times...... of course, I completely removed mine from the tractor, and had it sitting up on it's side to work on it. Pulling the cover was easy, with two people...... Only thing that stuck to it was a couple shims. I just put those back on the ends of the shafts sticking up. Worked great.

Gaskets were about 17 bucks a pop, as I recall.... still available though. Given that clearances on that end were important enough to be shimmed.... I am thinkin' that the gasket is pretty much a REQUIREMENT. Else, things may be to tight, and that's not a good scene.

That's the one you want.
Also look at Atlanticcentrals thread on improving his 16G, he had to replace his PTO clutch and took lots of pictures.

There are also plenty of pictures in my 816 thread, I used the above manual for my tear down.

Push come to shove and you get stuck just ask and one of us that's been into these transmission will help you.
