I noticed the last two time I’ve mowed the first time I engage the PTO there was a long delay (3 or 4 seconds) before it engaged. I wonder if something is sticking in the PTO. About a month ago I hit a stump and bent a blade and killed the engine. I wonder if this could have caused a PTO problem. My 2012 X748 has 720 hours now.

Anyone experience this type of problem?

My x475 has a few second delay when turning on the pto switch also. I think that's normal

Thanks, Once it is warmed up the delay is gone. Cold fluid I suppose. But I don't remember it taking this long before the last few weeks.

I guess I never payed any attention to if it takes longer while cold or hot. Next time I use it I'll try to remember to watch and then try to remember to report back my findings.

Are you at full throttle when you engage it? Mine is like: pull switch-one Mississippi, PTO starts turning, 2-Mississippi, it's full speed.

Same here for my x595. It's always been that way, cold or hot. As soon as the switch is pulled the engine lugs down for a split second then recovers back to full speed within another second. And I've been mowing that large massively overgrown 25 acre field I mentioned in another thread for the last week - there have been several "surprise" ~2" diameter invisible tree trunks under the foliage that have stopped the blades cold and stalled the engine. (And one 3/8" steel cable!) No bent blades, no PTO issues. The photo shows some of the crazy crap I'm mowing down. That foliage to the left of the tractor is what I'm mowing in that section of the field, it is not the edge of the field. Really wish I had a brush hog. 20190810_182907_1565606499670.jpg

I engage at half throttle. It has never waited for 3 or 4 seconds until recently. There was always a slight delay of maybe 1 second.

I'm not sure why it takes so long on the first engage. I wonder if sitting for a week it is sticking a bit and after the first time it then engages normally.

I had another thought. There must be a solenoid valve to engage the PTO. The spool could be getting sticky. I wonder if that valve is an integral part of the solenoid. It is probably not easy (expensive) to replace

My X585 always has had a little delay after pulling the PTO lever before you can hear it start to engage.
Always engages smoothly.

Fluid level is good. The fluid and filters have always been changed on JD's schedule with JD parts and fluid.
Fluid level was my first guess when I read the original post. My X748 has about a 2 second delay on the deck, yet the delay on the hydro tiller is less than 1 second. Maybe check the solenoid on the back of the machine and make sure it is still good and tight. If nothing is too apparent and the deck is working like it should when it is on I would say monitor the times and if they get worse then dig deeper.

I know that is correct, but the diesel has so much torque half throttle works fine. I figure it is easier on the PTO. I disengae at half throttle too as I figure it is easier on the PTO brake. Maybe I'm wrong about it but I've been doing it for over 10 years.

On a diesel it doesn't matter. I've engaged my mower blades at idle with no issue. On a gasoline engine you'll stall it.

On a diesel it doesn't matter. I've engaged my mower blades at idle with no issue. On a gasoline engine you'll stall it.
It has more to do with the rpms and the hydraulic pump speed (which equates to fluid volume being pumped) at engagement than it does with whatever the torque is at xxx engine speed.

I do wonder sometimes about what effect the engine speed (and therefore flow from the trans pump) has on the brake when you shut off the PTO, mostly when it has to stop a heavy load. I have a DR wood chipper that I run off my 540 PTO. Tractor does very well powering it, but you definitely have to have the engine at full speed when you engage it, the flywheel on the chipper weighs 50 pounds, and the diesel bogs a bit while the flywheel spins up to speed. If you shut the PTO off at full throttle, the brake has to slow that big chunk of rotating steel from its full speed, which I can't see as being good for it over the long term. I usually slow the throttle gradually and let the engine slow the flywheel until the engine is about 1/4 throttle, then shut off the PTO. When you stop the mower deck, all the rotating parts together don't have the mass that flywheel has, so not nearly as much load on the brake.

Mowed today and the PTO engaged right away unlike the last two times. I hope it stays that way,:tango_face_smile:
