Sloppy steering

Hello everyone, I just got done mowing my grass and it looks like a drunk did it.....the steering is very sloppy on my Yard Machines (MTD 638 RL) riding mower, it only has 11 hours on it (I installed an hour meter) and it's 10 months old. The steering wheel will move a quarter turn before it makes the wheels turn. I looked at the shaft bottom and it looks like the end goes into a round bearing and that looks loose....Is there a way to tighten something up or what?
I have an operators manual but no parts manual. thanks
