Single stage snowblower paddle project

after all I have heard about the poor performance on the older Sears single stage snow blowers (throwers)and all the good things I have heard about improvements on two stage snow blowers with the rubber paddles added, I thought I'd give it a try on the old Sears single stage. It took about an hour, only fitment issue was when I tightened the bolts on the rubber conveyor belt it squished out and had to be trimmed back with a single edge razor in order to allow the paddles to spin freely. Now I just have to wait for some deep snow to try it out. I know I shouldn't compare this SS14 and snow "thrower" to my 26 hp Craftsman with a 44" Bercomac but I do think it should be a little better at least. Has anyone else tried this and if so how big were the improvements?

Interesting, I'll be waiting on your feedback on how it works.

I really never considered the old Sears blowers to be problematic (i.e., preform poorly) only the heaviest (water laden) snow caused plugging but I'd expect those conditions to be TOUGH for any blower. I do however have one modification to my first Sears/Roper single stage blower and that is outboard Fafnir bearings on the rotating member (can't think of what the spiny thing is called).

That spinning thing is an auger :)
I did do the paddle project, and with a SS14 no less.

I can attest that it does indeed work.

In addition to the rubber extensions, i also took the auger out, and painted the housing and chute.

Here are a few shots of the blizzard we had Feb 9th a couple years ago. My town got a record 31" of snow that storm. The SS14 and the 39" thrower did a great job. The next month we got another freak storm that dumped another 26". I believe they were storms Nemo and Saturn.

In addition to the Sears, i also did this mod to a Case/Ingersoll single stage castor/thrower and it helped that implement just as it did the Sears.
Now, you have an open auger Sears blower, and I have a barrel auger Haban blower. Would it make that big of a difference on the Haban blowers?
Ive never tried it on a Haban blower..but i cant imagine it wouldnt help.

Rather than paddles the habans have more of a "scoop". Reducing the gap between the scoop tip and the rear housing should still be beneficial.
Hi:howdy:I did the paddle modification on my haban blower and it picks up wet soggy snow, sandy snow. I have not had any issues(yet)and it's been 2 seasons now.
