Shuttle shift any good?

I've owned a few Simplicity, AC, Deutz-Allis garden tractors in the past(still have a few) but I have never owned any "Shuttle Shift" garden tractor and was wondering if they are tough enough to pull around the same size loads I can with my Cub Cadet 124? I was offered a '74 712 Shuttle Shift Allis Chalmers for $100 and it seems like a lot of tractor for the price. Comparing it to my go to workhorse(my '67 Cub 124) it seems overall much bigger and I was just wondering if the shuttle shift can handle doing the work my old Cub Cadet can do? I currently use the Cub for moving around trailers with lumber on them which can weigh in excess of 7000lbs. and this is done on uneven surfaces and up and down hills. I'm considering buying the Allis because my Cub will be out of service for a while during restoration and my ATV is out of order as well and I need something small enough to maneuver in tight spaces but strong enough to handle the work. Will the AC do the job? Also, if anyone has pics of their 712 or just of the shuttle shift transmission I'd love to see it. Thank you.

I forgot to ask something. How much does the AC 712 weigh? By looking at it I'd guess it to weigh pretty close to it's name; "712". I know that's not what it stands for but I'm just saying. Anyone have the actual number and not just a guess?
From my albeit limited experience there is nothing wrong with the shuttle shift and will handle what you're talking about. That said, most shuttles are what I see with axle and transmission issues. The planetary gear mechanism that allows the torque from the motor to reverse 'instantly' at the transmission input is capable of putting a lot of stress into that drive line. Someone who beat the snot out of it will probably crack an axle tube. My father had a 7117S that was a tank and worked well, on the other hand I bought a 3416S that had it's axle cracked and a 7014S with transmission issues. I've never personally seen one fail that wasn't abused, IMO.
My spec book lists an AC 712 without any attachments at 782 pounds.

The shuttle is fully capable of handling the same loads as other power train options offered by AC and Simplicity. A properly adjusted and servicable shuttle can be smooth as silk.
I have an AC 712 I use with a tiller and the shuttle works fine also gives the tractor 4 forward gears rather than the standard 3 gears
I had a 3410S it mowed well they are dirty they throw greese all under tractor most are in need of high priced drive belt I junked mine out.

They can be greasy if the rear seal is bad. I run $10 FP belts on mine. Mine is in need of rebuilding as it slings some grease under the seat pan but no grease gets on the belts.

I also have 2 7016 h they are better tractors to deal with but not as good as a Sunstar as I go ahead it seems hard to go back to the old things.
Though the hydros have some advantages under certain situations, I much prefer the shuttle to my 916h. It is far smoother to operate and easier to maintain constant ground speed.
every one has there own Idea's about whats good and not as good that helps the world go a round one mans treasure is anothers junk . Keep up the good work.

thanks for the slap down:00000060:
I am sorry you took it that way I don't think Shuttle tractors are worth fixing thats at my house you like them you fix and keep them I also don't like mowers with verticle shaft motors will not have one . This is only my idea about mowers after 50 years of mowing my place Old and hard headed.
ShamrockJack, I was the same way until I got my 2001 landlord dlx. Now I would not mow without foot control. Snowthrowing is also so much better with foot control and a short throw lift lever. Now tilling and plowing, etc...gimmie a sovereign!
I can see no advantage to foot control for me , old habits hard to brake I don't push snow and mowe with Sunstar and 60 inch deck. I sure hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings.
