I have an opportunity to purchase a 1991 GT1800 tractor with 48" deck and 54" snow blade. The tractor has 1100 hours on it and is in excellant shape. The only known problem is that the U-joint that connects the PTO shaft to the mower deck is broken. The "quick connect" collar is gone. Owner is asking $300....seems like a good deal providing I can get the U-joint fixed.

What will it take to replace/repair this U-joint? Can they still be bought?

Are there any known/common problems with this model?

What does "Duratrac" mean?

If everything is straight and it doesn't smoke, these are desirable tractors because of the power steering option. I have seen them with fel's too. If the price is right to you, I think this is a good price.

It's an 18 HP Kohler. This tractor is super clean. It was owned by an elderly gentleman who was meticilous about maintenance. Always garage kept also.

Anyone know about the u-joint or what Duratrac means?

I have a GT2000, its a great tractor. The part you are looking for is for sale on ebay, it ends this sunday I think. Sams has your part as well he makes new ones.
I believe Duratrac is just marketing.
I have never heard of one being sold for so cheap usually they go for a couple of thousand dollars. Get it while you can!

After checking on Ebay I think I've found the U-joint for $300.00!!!

Sonny's Bolens appears to have it for $200.

This seems like a crazy amount of money to me. Do these prices sound right to you guys? Are Bolens parts just expensive because of availability?

The U-joints are expensive. Other parts are not so bad.

If you haven't gotten the joint yet check with a clutch and joint shop as they should be able to check it and match it there are 2 close to me and they both do a good job so you might be able to get one from them alot cheaper it was 14.00 dollrs for the joint for the drive shaft on my 1476

Good idea, I've heard of other folks finding ujoints at the local auto parts shop that actually fit their tractors and saved a ton of $$.

I don't know what size that U-joint is, but I've been able to get small U-joints from TSC that match the drive shafts on tractors I've had.

be real careful on that subject - some kid popped into to one of the other forums, typing with every known and unknown phonetic spelling for common words, no punctuation whatsoever. You literally had to study the text to decipher what he might have been trying to communicate. One poster criticised him, a couple of posters criticised his criticism, i jumped in to support the original criticism, and all **** broke loose - we were soundly "chastised" by the "progressive" group think that sez encourage anyone based solely on their intentions, not on their execution or results. I've come to the conclusion "left is right, right is wrong" -

on the OP's original subject - just the power steering components, sell individually on ebay, twice now, for over $500 - so it would be hard to get hurt at $300

Guys on the punctuation thing Maynard was right My post was hard to read and it is not a problem if you correct peoples errors as long as it is not done in a manner that is disrespctful and I did not take it as that, it helps everyone who reads the posts to make it a little easier. i was more reacting to the "theater of the absurd" that unleased when the other guy posted in kids jargon with no punctuation - in fact, the only other thing that kid could have done, to make it tuffer to decipher, would have been to leave out spaces altogether, and just let all the text run together

that kid did make it worse, though, (bear in mind, he was apparently brand new to the forum and that was his actual first post), by slamming the first guy that asked him to punctuate and use normal english - he assserted "....the guys in my paintball forums dun't hv kno prob w my wds" - it was text that was that abbreviated and phonetically spelled - i didn't do a good job but you get the pix
