I bought my 2nd 8 hp kohler today...it had been listed awhile and was used by the university of Minnesota as a snow unit...it came with a brush and quick hitch and snow shield...it has a few modifications to it I am not sure why...has the high/low lever on the left side...panel hole for it was never used...also has a steering brake that works well and has 2 wires to the pto in front...not sure if this is a cutoff switch? what was the purpose of the red pads in the handle bars? also one under left side grip...also can you guys tell me year of production? I think it may be a 1997...I did get it for 525.00, not to let you know how much I did nor did not pay but in general to see what gravelys are selling for in different areas...some sellers just want too much and then they realize after a while they have to come down when nobody calls...
it has a bit of rust in some areas but that because the university used a lot of salt...still overall in good condition, may sell the brush and use this for another mower or if I can buy one of those stump grinders if 8hp is enough power... thanks in advance...

Well, based off the 6 lead written on the hood, your tractor is a 6 lead unit, or what was once called an LI or CI, as such it would not have been equipped with a two speed axle, this is why there is no high low lever on the dash. What you have is a Pro8 with a 4 lead worm, the 8 standing for the HP of the engine.

From the Commercial 8 series up to the last Professional series two wheel, the high low rang of the transmission would have been on the left handle bar with the Forward/Reverse lever being on the right handle bar. The 6 lead describes the size of the worm gear that drives the axle. Your Professional 8 has the intermediate size worm gear and an 8 HP engine.

At one time Gravely two wheel tractors were offered as an 8,6 and 4 lead, a two speed axle was offered on the 8 lead tractors as an option to give 8 speeds and offer the " best of both worlds". The 8 lead tractor would have the fastest ground speed while the 4 lead was the slower and most useful in the garden. From what I understand the 6 lead units form the CI up to the last two wheel tractors were the not very common. It makes sense having a 4 lead unit for snow removal as a fast ground speed is not required.

I would say that you did very well for that tractor with the power broom. The red buttons on the handle bars and steering arm are safety switches, let go of the tractor while it is moving or with the PTO engaged and the engine should shut off. The wires at the front of the tractor on the PTO are as well safety switches. The newest Gravely two wheels were required to have all kinds of modern safety devices, cut-off switches and PTO brakes.
