How in the world does the shifter boot go on? I got a new none at TSC but the opening is so small I can't get it over the base. What is the trick?

Tractor supply isn't known for stocking quality tractor parts - If you don't have any luck, you may need to shop for better quality parts. Just8N's have always served me well.

A lot of folks want to tuck the bottom of the boot into the shifter cover - It's designed to rest on top as shown in the photo below.

I have to differ with you on the installation of the shifter boot and how it fits. The bottom area that you show is outside the plate housing, would allow water or other substance in the transmission. The way the boot is designed is to fit (bottom area) under the metal bubble part. Therefore, no water can get under the rubble boot.

Think about how rain water would travel down the side of the boot. If you tucked it into the shifter plate, you would be channeling it into the tranny rather than shed it off. The very same principle used in roofing - Top element overlaps the bottom.

Top over bottom is right. That is the trouble I have. The opening on the bottom is very small and I am unable to stretch the boot over the flange. I will try the hot water thing tomorrow.
On the up side the Dowden foot feed was installed last night!!

The pic is the correct way it should look when installed. How do you like the foot feed? Always thought I would like one but I want it to work as a deccelerator like on a dozer. You know set the throttle and be able to slow it down for obstacles or corners and the such.

Foot feed is great!!! I have a bucket on mine and the detents on the throttle plate are worn out so it always would drop to idle when I hit a bump or something while my hand was working the bucket.
The hand throttle does still work so if I read you right you can use the hand throttle to set a fixed position and use the foot part to go over that setting. When you take your foot off, it will go back to the pre set setting of the hand throttle.

That is my understanding of the way they work, never laid eyes on one in the flesh so to speak.

Hey John,
Like he said it returns when you left your foot off. I've made several for the hundred series and early thousand series and they would work great on Mutt with or without power steering. If you want to make one up yourself I'll put together some info for you.
Here's one on my 671.

The first time I tried installing one of these boots was not a fun thing. I would just about have it on and the other side would come off. After a little digging I found that you need to turn it inside out, slide the little part on as far as you can get it, and "roll" it over itself onto the indent in the housing. It will go much easier than you think when doing it that way. Heating it up might help but I didn't need to do that to mine. Mine came from TSC as well.

Thanks JS.
I was actually thinking that that would work. I didn't get a chance to mess with the tractor over the weekend, but I will try to find some time after work this week to play with it.
