Hi:

I FINALLY found the S mark on the flywheel on the JD 210. Used Krud Kutter solution to get the rust off.

When I position the flywheel to the S mark adjacent the | mark on the flywheel bearing plate, I find that I cannot set the points...ie: the points when pushed as far in as possible against the pin that rides on the cam lobe. It is not until the flywheel is moved further towards TDC that it opens the gap.

Is this cuz the little pin that is pushed against the points is worn or the cam lobe? What should the measured length of that pin be? Anyone know?

thx.

It is possible either of those can cause that--sorry but I have no idea what the length of the push rod for the points is,you may be able to find that info on a google search..

If the rubbing block on the points where the push rod goes is worn down that can cause this also..

You may have more luck posting in the Lawn and Garden Tractors By Brand, John Deere Forum (link listed below) instead of the CUT (compact utility tractors) section. That is where I post my questions about my 212 and where most of the guys with the JD riders hang out.

Setting points on a 200 series Kohler is easy. First turn the engine over by hand until the points are as open as they get. Second adjust them to .020, tighten the screw so they stay, check to make sure they are still at .020, put it back together and do this again in a couple of years. Very simple ignition system with no things like spark advance etc. Been doing this since 1975 when the first 200 series were built and it always works. The pin could be worn and you can replace it but really will not change the timing with my method. The free downloadable Kohler manual will tell how long the pin is. Roger

When you have the engine timing Mark's aligned, but another set of Mark's on the cover, and fan.
Like this... Tire Automotive tire Green Tractor Automotive wheel system

Stationary mark at 9, the engine at 12.
Hook up timing light and check.
The 12 horse is 20 degrees.
