I know you used to be able to go to the sears parts site and download a repair manual for your model.

They have owners manuals, service or repair manuals are a lot more in depth.

i just tried to get a service manual for my friends t 1000 and the a.i. that i chatted with gave me the owners manual said they don't have the shop manuals mine is a model217.203700. i am trying to find out what engine is on it . i know it is a420 cc and has a 42 inch deck. but i am not sure what motor no. it is.

According to this page it is a Zongshen motor.
