SAE 140 GL-1 Gear Oil

This old troy horse tiller I have apart I would love to refill with some 140 Gl-1 oil or 80w140 but from all the checking and calls I have made it no longer exists up my way any more
All I have found is some Lucus syn motor cycle oil 80w140 that apparently is gl-1 but it is like 25.00 a liter which is way too much for this old girl considering she will need at least 4 maybe 5

I talked to my uncle about it who was a real good CAT mechanic for over 45 years and he tells me oils have changed big time over the years as we all know and today's gl-5 will only be an issue in these old tillers and the brass if the temp gets high like over 200 degree which it won't

So?? have you guys heard this before?? or what other options do I have
Do some gl-5's state they are OK with brass??
Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for the link, I am no further ahead

I did find some Lucus product that may work but I am waiting to hear back
The spec sheets says ideal for older wrom gearboxes so maybe it might be OK
It is 85W140 plus
Check the Warren oil site and see if they have a seller near you.
Thanks but nothing here
Cheers
I would think it would be OK. It mentions older worm gearboxes. Really the best bet for any of the new multi-vis oils if it does not say "yellow metal friendly" would be email the company and get the info directly from the manufacturer. This has long been a debate and mostly lots of heresay. As one of our local newscasters says, educate yourself, get the facts.

Here is what Troy-Bilt says: Gear Oil
Thanks for the feedback. Know all about the heresay. LOL. I am old school to the bone in everything I do and real bad accepting that things change over 40 years and if I could get gl-1 would be using it BUT I cannot
I think it the Lucus will be fine also but did ask the question on the yellow and will post what they come back with. The link you provided from troy is a big help
As my uncle says show me a tiller it has damaged and even if it does I don't have enough tiller years left to worry about it
Nice guy :)

Looks like I am no rush. Just started to SNOW here. OH man hope we don't have a winter like last year. Oh well have three honda blowers all serviced and ready to go this year. No more just having one after last winter

Why are you no further ahead? Several of us have used the Sta-Lube product pictured, all you need to do is order it.

From where in canada?? Cannot ship oils from the US that I know of. I know one never could

I went to Amazon.com and didn't see any restrictions. You might check with them. They sell just about every type of oil you could need.
The biggest restriction is shipping to Canada plus being an oil. Most want nothing to do with international sales. I don't know why since it is just one extra paper to be filled out but I run into this all the time with my e-bay purchases

You may need to be persistent at a local shop. I went to a local NAPA, and fought with the guy who insisted they didn't carry it because it wasn't coming up in the computer. Eventually, he pulled out a paper catalog and we found it in there. Had a gallon the next day...

You really just need to find a Sta-Lube dealer, or get lucky online.

Pretty clueless here Mike I find. Could not even get a set of points for that old 5hp briggs at the small engine shop. Looked at me like I had 3 heads and I don't think they knew what I was talking about
Lucky I went through a few boxes of old snowblower parts I still had kicking around and there was a set. Same with the carb kit yesterday for the briggs said they could not get one. I went through my old new gaskets and I think I found what I needed or close
Cheers

Am surprised I have not got a response from LUCUS yet however

Well regardless of many tries Lucus did not get back to me and answer my questions so yesterday I said Oh well and ordered a gallon since I cannot find anything even close to the old specs. It is going to have to do
Here is the data sheet on it

Thanks but the problem is I am in canada and cannot get that stuff here
If I was state side there are quite a few options
I have a gallon of the lucas now so going to give that a try
Honestly with three complete spare gear cases now if I destroy one so be it is the way I am thinking now which I honestly don't think is going to happen in the rest of my life time

There was much ado about the newer oils and "yellow metals". I once saw an article (wish I would have kept it) claiming the yellow metals issue was not so much a problem unless the unit was running at temps in the 250 degress and above. So if you have a 90 or 140 weight gear oil I would think you will be fine. It's not like we run these tillers 24/7. Still think it's terrible trade between the US & Canada is not better!
Funny my uncle who has been a heavy duty mechanic for CAT for 45 years told me almost exactly the same thing
He said I was worrying for nothing that the tiller would never get hot enough to make a difference
Cheers
