Going to start on the next project. A 8179 KT with a frozen Kohler KT-19 series II. Noticed that this engine uses a different engine adapter #32164 than the adapter #20555 used on the Kohler single and Briggs powered engines. But don't see a gasket used like #18340 used with the #20555 plate. Looking at the Onan adapter #18427 it looks like another seal was added. What seals the adapter to the engine on the 8179? RTV? I'm sure I will be able to repair the KT-19, but do have a Kohler 18 hp twin from a Cub Cadet, MV-18 if needed. Anybody know what adapter to use with the MV-18 engine?

I believe there is an O-ring that goes between the adapter and the engine, pretty sure that Kohler has a roughly 2.5" diameter ring on the rear closure plate that seals against the adapter. I suspect RTV will work fine.

The Kohler 18 hp you have from a Cub, is it horizontal or vertical? If it horizontal, it is a M18. Pictures please?

When GRAVELY switched to improved Magnum 18 and 20 engine, Kohler made the engine to bolt directly to the GRAVELY trans axle. The rear closure plate on the GRAVELY version of that engine IS the adapter. There is no separate adapter on the later tractors.

Thanks. You are right the Magnum engine I have is a horizontal shaft style engine, that is now mounted in a John Deere 317 tractor. I am hoping to repair the KT-19 and keep the M-18 on the JD. What Gravely models used the M-18/M20 engine?

In 1989 when GRAVELY introduced the G series, they switched to the new Kohler Magnum M18 and M20.

Tractors like mine, which is a 1995:





16-G and 18-G tractors actually are both 18 HP M18's, but the 16-G lacked an oil filter, easily added.

20-G tractors had the 20 HP M20

The M18 you have on the Deere will not easily go on the GRAVELY, it may bolt up to the KT17 adapter you have, but I suspect crank is not right for the GRAVELY.

Gravely put gaskets on some of the twins and not others. The factory used RTV in most cases, it’s only needed around the crown of the input shaft and the well for the PTO. If the factory used a gasket, it used a similar-thickness spacer to maintain the critical bevel gear depth. You want to use a gasket if there was one originally, and no gasket if there was not. Measure the gear extension to be sure.

Thanks guys. I was able to find the #s on the M-18 I have. And found the crank is different than ones used on the G models. I can't read the tag on the KT-19 used on the 8179-KT, its painted over. Does anybody know the Gravely or better yet the Kohler part # for the KT-19 series II crankshaft used? Who knows I might be able to get the K-19 running, but if not a plan B swap with a running engine will help to find if this is a repairable or a parts machine.

MV-18 engine with vertical crankshaft? It won’t go on a Gravely rider....

Well I did find the tag on the KT-19 today. It does have spec.# 49201. But still cannot find the Gravely or Kohler Part# for the crankshaft. It does look like the Series II and Magnum use the basic design and are interchangeable. The Magnum engine I have is a M-18. I was wrong to ID it as A MV-18.

The G series was introduced in 1986 with the 8000-G tractors.

Steve, yes, I should have been more specific as in Professional G Series.

Just going by the parts break downs, the question remains, exactly when did the move from the Series II engine to the Magnum engine?

And when did Kohler start delivering the integral closure plate/adapter engines, and were there series II engines with the integral closure plate/adapter?

I have never seen one?

Every Pro G with a Kohler twin I have ever seen came with a Magnum with the integral closure plate/adapter.

I have had people not familiar with the later Kohler twins on the GRAVELY tell me they did not exist and that there had to be a separate adapter.

Are the first I know of for Gravely
There are KT 17 and KT 19 also in 1985.
I suspect the change occurred for the 1986 model year riders, some of which were built in late 1985, but were still 1986 models.
The last KT engines were likely used in the last 8000 series tractors built in the earlier part of 1985.
