I have mtd 990 with a 16 hp bigs in it with a starter generator. The engine is burning oil and the starter is not sounding good. I have a oppertunity to buy a used 20 hp honda engine for 900$

Do you thing it is a good Idea to upgrade the engine to the honda ?

any suggestions would be helpfull

I would suggest an attempt to rebuild the Briggs first. It'd undoubtedly be cheaper, and given that you'd be messing around a lot with fitting the Honda (notably the gas tank) you wouldn't really be losing that much time.

yea it'll deffinately be cheaper to rebuild the briggs. and you don't have to worry about hacking everything up to squeeze the honda in. just my opinion. if it looks like you won't have to do alot of work to get the new engine in there then go for it.

the cost of rebuilding the Briggs is about the same as the Honda. Engines is something I have not picked up. I can build a attachment like a loader from scrap metal but rebuilding engine is out of my area

Dan, assumining you will not need the front PTO pulley for a snowblower, and the Honda would fit, go for it.

On th other hand, if you are so skilled with a welder, there's no reason you couldn't learn what you need to do the rebuild. A single cylinder engine is a good candidate for practice.

is $900 for a used engine a typo ?
ive never rebuilt a B&S motor but there isnt a whole lot to the small engines.
i would take a crack at it if i were you. whats the worse that could happen.....you mess up the messed up motor ?
plus im a huge fan of making things original if i can....modify if i have no other option.

and there are options out there: http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/grd/2039483303.html

Swapped the orginal engine out for a Kohler 20. IMO it fits very well, is quiter, and I have have 0 issues (probably will now). I did loose the PTO for now, however, I had to make a stub shaft, but I'm gathering up the parts to re-connected the PTO (don't really know why, I have nothing that uses it but want to put everything back. The 20 gives me plenty of power to run an additional pump off the front, and most of the time, I'm just over idle. The one picture of when I brought it home shows a possible fuel tank location. Don't need one myself but this seemed to work for the PO.

I am in the just east of ottawa.

the engine has died in the 990 went to start and it killed the battery

It will cost 200 to put new rings in it. That leaves 300 to rebuild the starter that does not cover the carb, governer
