Looking at repowering my 317 with a Yanmar. Has anyone attemped this. It looks like it may be to tall at 24in and mine only has about 22in.

Mounting the radiator will be a problem. Why not just buy a 330?

I am looking for a Kohler that was in this one. The Yanmars are only $779 13hp. I would like to put a Onan back in perferably a B43 engine.

Put as Kohler back in. Might be easier. But a deisel would be great.

Found a Kohler Command 23hp V twin fron a LA130 , anyone think this may fit in the 317. I'll have to make new bed rails to mount it but looks to me like a good fit. Its a CV23s 2004 engine.

Hi Mike, I believe that the L series tractors are all vertical shaft engines and you need a horizontal shaft engine for you 317. The Kohler Command engine is a good choice for repower; you could also consider a Briggs Vanguard. Good luck.:MTF_wel:

I know this thread is 3 years old but for anyone else interested, I would recommend this...it's a Lombardini twin cylinder diesel made by Kohler. Looks like it would be a good fit for a 317 assuming it uses the same mounting points and everything.

Buy a 332 and be done with it. Modifications to fit a radiator would be a challenge.

Lombardini makes diesels and puts the Kohler brand on them in the USA. They also make air cooled diesels in the 12- 27 hp range.. It would be interesting to see one of those swapped into a small tractor.
The only thing I know is that they are expensive.
The only multi cylinder air cooled diesel I have any experience with was extremely loud. That may have changed, I don't know

There was a 317 for sale on my local Craigslist back in the summer with a diesel. I did a quick search to find some pics of it and found a post on a different forum with pics of it. It's a real nice custom job
