The tractor currently has 23x9.5-12 turf tires on the rear. Can the rims manage 10.5 inch wide tires? 12 inch wide? Would they tend to balloon rather than lay flat?

Well alot depends on the tractor and wheel size.... but Im guessing yes. a 10.5 would be OK. You looking at turf's, or ag styled? the ag tires seem to be a little narrower.

The 9.5's are a real oddball... Too bad realy... becouse I think its a perfect size for a lot of the smaller old YT, and GT's that came with 23 8.5x12's. Not to wide, but not to narrow. I hae a set on my 1970 JD112, and they fit perfect.

10.5 on a 9.5 wheel shouldn't be an issue.2ply turf tires may balloon a little, but 4ply tires shouldn't have any issues. Most Ags are 4ply.Check the side wall or tire manufactures website for specs.

C2H80,
My Sears had 23x9.5-12's on it when i got it.
I put the tru-power 23x10.5-12's on it and it worked fine.

The tru-powers are not as wide as say the super lugs. So they didnt balloon on these rims.
